This invention relates to the airtight closing of vessels, more particularly-of those used as preserve or jam jars, in which it is usual to provide a flanged face surrounding the 5 mouth of the vessel, on which face is placed a flat elastic ring with which the lid or cover makes a tight joint.
In order to insure a reliable tight joint, it is necessary, in the usual constructions, to grind both the face of the vessel on which the packing ring is placed and the face of the lid which'engages with the packing ring, as the unevenness of the surfaces 'occuring in the normal manufacture is too great to enable a reliable joint to be insured without subsequent treatment. Moreover, in the usual vessel and lid constructions, the ground faces utilized for the joint are very liable to be damaged, more'particularly when the vessel is being opened.
, According to the present invention the disadvantages in question are eliminated by retaining the flat rubber ring placed on an annular face of the vessel and by eflecting the tight joint between the vessel and the lid by means of a face of the lid which is slightly tapered. It has been found that by utilizing more particularly the outer edge of the flat rubber ring, an excellent joint is obtained, without it being necessary to'grind even one of the two faces which engage from the op.-
\ posite sides with the rubber ring.
More particularly good results are obtained when the slightly tapered pressure face .of the lid projects beyond the outer ed e of the packing ringand terminates in a ownward flange which forms an effieient protection for the packing face and may be used as a grip for openin thelid if the vessel be suitably constructe An embodiment of a preserve jar with the closing device according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

In place of the annular flanges or projecting portions 6 and 7 may be 7 provided also single projections, in which case, of course care must'be taken to see that when the lid is put on, they are exactly above one another.
