236,313. Sykes, A. F. April 15, 1924. Addition to 160,223 and 186,658. Magnetic instruments; loud-specakers; diaphragms.-In an electrodynamic telephone transmitter or receiver comprising an extended conducting winding or sheet, re-entrant in the direction of the current flow, arranged in a magnetic field, and itself adapted to receive or generate sound, the arrangement is such that sound waves cannot leak past the said winding or sheet. In one form, Fig. II, a solenoid sheet 102 of conducting material is wound in re-entrant manner over distance pieces 103 extending between magnetic poles. A sound channel 105 communicates with the interior. Some of the re-entrant loops may be omitted. In another form, Fig. IV, the sheet 102 is arranged as shown, a sound channel 105 being provided in a cover plate. The space at the lower end of the Figure may be left open or the arrangement duplicated with a second sound channel at the, bottom. An adjustment wheel may be provided on one of the end distance pieces to take up slack in the strip. Each loop may be replaced by a bag, Fig. IX. An extended surface in line may be used. Fig. VII, the sound being collected from the space 220 through a slit in one or both pole-pieces. This slit is opened out according to a logarithmic law until a square section is obtained, after which a horn is attached. In all forms the edges of the strip are arranged so that sound cannot leak past and various forms of seal for the purpose are described. The edges may extend into slots in the pole-pieces, which slots are filled with oil or petroleum jelly, or may abut into plush velvet, or petroleum jelly on the faces of the pole-pieces. String or velvet may be used in conjunction with petroleum jelly. These forms of seal permit the edges of the strip to move inwards to accommodate bulging. The conducting strip may consist of aluminium mounted by means of petroleum jelly or rubber solution on a band of thin paper or silk, or may be a winding of metallic tape of many turns. Overlapping turns of bare aluminium tape may be used, the natural oxide providing the necessary insulation.
