Abstract

139,498. Pupin, M. I. Feb. 4, 1918, [Convention date]. Condenser telephones. - In apparatus for receiving ultra - audible high - frequency vibrations, particularly for subaqueous use, the receiver proper may be a diaphragm carrying a coil and vibrated in a strong magnetic field, or, as shown, may be condenser comprising an inner conductor 1 with an outer conducting sheath 3 separated by a layer of yielding insulating material such as Para rubber. Insulating end caps 4 are provided through which pass a lead 9 connected to conductor 1 and leads 10, 12 connected through external conducting rings 5 with the covering 3. In use, the condenser is connected, in parallel with a large condenser (not shown), to a source of E. M. F. and is immersed in the medium through which the vibrations are received.
