235,893. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. June 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Wire.-A wire of diameter less than 1 micron is made by connecting a wire of larger diameter as the cathode of a glow discharge at such a current that disintegration occurs. Singlecrystal wire of less than 10 microns in diameter may thus be made. The wire may be used in string galvanometers and resistance thermometers. As shown, a tungsten wire 2 having a diameter of 50 microns, and a nickel wire anode 5, are mounted in a bulb containing argon at a pressure of 0.2 mm. of mercury. The ends of the wire 2 are connected together and through a galvanometer 11 and resistance 10 with a battery 8, which is shunted by a resistance 9 having a sliding contact connected with the anode. The discharge current is preferably 1 milliampÞre, and the resistance of the wire 2 is measured periodically to determine its diameter.
