235,634. Edser, E., and Minerals Separation, Ltd. March 18, 1924. Emulsions, making.-A temporary aqueous bituminous emulsion for use in briquetting fuel is made by first melting bitumen of the type obtained by the distillation of petroleum having an asphaltic base with or without a " cut-back " such as creosote oil, adding ¢ to 2 per cent by weight of one of the higher fatty acids or oil containing it and agitating the molten mixture in a warm alkaline solution. In an example, to 6 parts of molten bituminous residuum from the distillation of Mexican fuel oil are added 1 part of creosote oil and ¢ per cent of oleic acid reckoned on the combined weight of bitumen and creosote oil. The mixture is poured into and agitated with four times its weight of water at 60‹ C. containing 2 per cent of sodium carbonate reckoned on the weight of bitumen and creosote oil. Cotton seed oil may be substituted for the oleic acid. Specification 216,948 is referred to.
