Abstract

Annealing. - In a device for annealing, in which the annealing pot is surrounded by an inert gas during the cooling period, the gas is maintained at a particular vacuum in order that the annealed material will come into contact as little as possible with injurious gases. The pot a is supported in a container b provided with a cover c closed by a liquid seal formed by a liquid d in a trough e. A tank g in the trough e contains the liquid for producing the inert gas, this liquid passing through a container n having means to control the supply to a pipe h having a nozzle i arranged above an evaporating pan k and below a hood m. The container n is provided with a float p actuating a needle valve o, the liquid space of the container communicating with a pipe r into which the end of the pipe h projects. Liquid can only pass from the container n into the pipe h when the vacuum in the pipe is of such magnitude that the liquid in the pipe r rises above the top of the pipe h whence it flows to the pan and is evaporated. The float p may be depressed by a spring-actuated rod x so that liquid may flow into the pipe h independently of the amount of vacuum in the latter. Water is supplied to the liquid seal in the trough e by a pipe y which passes under the cover c. In a modification for controlling the supply of inert gas from a gas supply pipe, the end of the pipe is immersed in a sealing liquid contained in a separate container, the pipe h being then connected to the top of the container.
