Abstract

Annealing; annealing-boxes.-In a process for annealing metallic articles in which they are cooled after annealing by placing the receptacles containing them in a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere, the receptacle 4 is placed in a receptacle 1 into which non-oxidizing or reducing gas is passed through the aperture 18, and the gas with the air allowed to escape through apertures 19, 20, 21 in the cover 12. After ten or fifteen minutes, the time depending on the area of the space round the pot 4, the apertures 19, 20 are closed and the reducing &c. gas allowed to escape through the aperture 21, a suitable burner being placed over this aperture to burn the escaping gas and control the flow of gas through the receptacle 1. The receptacle 1 is provided at its upper end with annular grooves 7, 8 formed by flanges 9, 10, 11, the cover 12 having depending flanges 13, 14, 15, the two latter fitting into the grooves 7, 8, the former being filled with a solid packing and the latter with a suitable liquid such as water or oil. The groove 8 may be formed by a separate ring detachably secured to the outside flange of the groove 7 and separated therefrom by a ring of asbestos &c.
