Annealing.-Metal articles are annealed while contained in thin sheet iron boxes or receptacles that are sealed by autogenous or electric welding, such containers being, however, provided with vent tubes that are closed after the air has been exhausted from the boxes or after the annealing boxes have been raised to the desired temperature. A box a, of thin sheet iron, for annealing annular or circular articles is provided with a wide top flange b to the edge of which a cover c is welded. The vent tube e is closed after the annealing temperature has been reached. After annealing the welded edges of the flange and the cover are cut or burnt off. The box may be used repeatedly till the flange has been cut away, whereupon it may be provided with a fresh flange. The boxes are made of suitable shapes for the articles to be annealed.
