Liquid raised up to solid.-In acetylene and like gas-generating apparatus in which the chamber containing the liquid reagent (water) is closed and is charged with air under pressure so as to enable the pressure of the generated gas to be varied at will, the generating-chamber 1 is located within an open casing 6 filled with water so as to constitute a cooling-jacket; the closed container 5 may surround the cooling-jacket 6 as shown in Fig. 2, or it may be a separate tank as shown in Fig. 4, with suitable pipe connections. The carbide is supported in a basket 4, and the generating- chamber is closed by a cover 2 carried by a yoke 23 and is held in position and is sealed by a central screwed member 25 through which passes the gas-outlet pipe 3. The closed generating-water container 5 is provided with an air-pump 13, a safety-valve 20, a blow-off valve 21, and an overflow plug 22 for adjusting the normal level of the water; and from this chamber water passes to an upstanding conduit 8 and then through ports 12 in an inwardly-extending conduit 7 of the generating-chamber and into which the conduit 7 enters.
