Abstract

321,784. Haworth, J. Oct. 6, 1928. Feed-openings for solids regulated by gasholders.-An acetylene generator of the kind comprising a casing containing water and a bell floating therein from which is suspended a carbide hopper, the valve of the. hopper being actuated when its stem comes into contact with the bottom of a. water-container the casing, is adapted for the generation of gas at high or low pressure, as desired, by the provision of a separate and detachable chamber adapted to be fitted to the top of the generator, As shown, a bell C floating in a casing A supports a carbide hopper D above a water-container E. The valve c of the hopper D is actuated when its stem c<1> contacts with the bottom of the container E. The generated gas passes through pipes G, g to a box g<1> from which gas at a low pressure can be withdrawn through a tap H. To adapt the apparatus for the generation of gas at a higher pressure, a chamber J is superposed gas-tightly on the casing A, and gas is passed into the chamber J by wav of pipe g<2>, catch-box g<3>, tap g<5>, and pipe a<2>. The catch-box g<3> carries a pressure gauge M, and a safety valve L is provided also. From the catch-box g<3> a pipe g<7> having a non- return valve g<6> leads to a sight-chamber N and a pipe g<9> for withdrawing the gas. In operation, the tap g<5> is opened for a short time so as to permit gas to pass into the chamber J; this causes the descent of the bell C and supply of carbide through the valve c; the gas then generated lifts the bell C and cuts off the carbide supply, and the tap g<5> is then opened again so as to allow gas at increased pressure to enter the chamber J until equilibrium is restored between the chamber J and the ccntainer E. These operations are continued until the desired pressure is attained, whereafter the tap g<5> is closed, and gas at the desired pressure is taken off through the pipe g<9>. The pipe K acts as a reducing or exhausting valve and carries a tap k<1> by which the pressure in the chamber J can be reduced. Specification 291,897 is referred to.
