Abstract

187,329. Wade, H., (Continenta-licht-und Apparatebau Ges.). July 18, 1921. Liquid raised up to solid.-In a high pressure acetylene generator having separate gas-storage and generating chambers 1, 4, Fig. 1, a hood is fitted over the gas-delivery pipe 16 and is carried by a float-device arranged in such a manner that increase in pressure in the storage chamber causes the hood to sink; as a result the pressure difference between the two chambers is increased, the water is driven away from the carbide through the communicating pipe 12, and generation of gas is thereby automatically controlled. Two constuctions of the float device are described. In the first construction a cylindrical hood 17, fitted over the gas-delivery pipe, is formed integral with an outer concentric and cylindrical float 18, Figs. 1 and 2, closed at the upper part and of enlarged diameter at the lower part; small openings 20, 22 are provided in the hood and enlarged lower part of float, to ensuie that at all times the latter is filled' with gas; the fioat device 17, 18 moves freely within a cylinder 23 which surmounts an annular float 24; at the upper part the cylinder 23 is provided with a small lateral opening 25; and to the bottom of the cylinder are secured stops 26 that limit the dcwnward movement of the float 17, 18, while a stop 27 carried by the casing limits its upward movement. In the second construction, the hood 34, Figs. 5 and 6, is carried by a closed chamber of disc shape and constituted by two parallel diaphragms 30, 31 welded together, and the construction is such that an increase in pressure forces inwardly the diaphragms and causes the float to sink; a valved connection 33 is provided for adjusting the pressure inside the chamber of the float. The water pipe 12 which connects the generating and gas-storage chamber is . provided with a cock 13, Fig. 1, the actuating-means 15 of which is so arranged that the cock must be in its closed position before the cover 6 of the generating chamber can be removed. The carbide rests on a grid 7 provided with a handle 8.
