Liquid raised up to solid; regulating head of liquid directly; purifying gases.- In an acetylene generator, the gas bell B acts as a gas-collecting chamber, and within it is placed the generating-chamber proper consisting of a carbide container 0 closed at the bottom and provided with a loosely-fitting cover O<1>. Water rises in the annular spaces between the bell B and the container 0 and between the cover O<1> and the container 0, and enters the latter through apertures J. Gas escapes through the annular space between the upper part of the container 0 and the cover 0', being thereby purified, and passes through apertures K into the collecting- space B<0>. The generator is capable of withstanding vibration since the narrow spaces provided for the passage of the water prevent continually recurring spurts of the latter into the generating chamber.
