Liquid raised up to solid; liquid supply controlled by variations of gas pressure; purifying gases. - An acetylene-generator comprises a chamber b immersed in water in a tank g and containing carbide-holders a with water inlets a<2> at different levels. On the descent of a gasholder c, a tappet d<2> thereon engages a lever c<3> and opens a valve e<1>, allowing air or gas to escape from the chamber b to the bell and water to enter the carbide-holders. Gas generated escapes past the valve c' and lifts the bell, whereupon the valve closes. Gas subsequently generated expels the water from the chamber b, thus cutting off the supply to the carbide, and escapes as shown by the arrow G to the bell e. On its way from the generator to the bell, the gas passes through purifying-material contained in a basket m' and under a washing-cap m.
