Abstract
24,856. Lander, W. Nov. 9. Acetylene.-In an acetylene generator, means are provided for preventing water vapour from passing upwards through the carbide when gas is not required ; the carbide-holder comprises a vessel with perforated walls and unperforated bottom and top, containing a number of superposed unperforated trays. In the form shown, the generating- chamber 1 contains a carbide-holder 8, Fig. 5, having a solid conical b ttom 9 resting on legs, and an unperforated lid 11, and perforated sides 10 to allow passage of gas and water. A number of unperforated superposed trays 12 supported by legs 13 subdivide the carbide, and are made conical to facilitate the escape of water from the carbide when the water level is forced down by gaseous pressure. When the gas-holder bell 2 descends, a plunger 4 secured thereto displaces water from a tank 3, the displaced water flowing by a siphon pipe 23 to the bottom of the generator. A spring may be arranged round a central guide-rod 18 of the gas-holder to increase the pressure when the gas-holder rises above a predetermined height. Dangerous excess of pressure is relieved by escape of gas through the siphon 23. More than one generator may be used.
