Liquid raised up to solid; cartridges, exposing contents of.-The carbide container of the acetylene generator of an automatic gas buoy is arranged to be closed to the entry of water when it is inserted in the generator, and to be opened after it is in position. Thus, openings in the top or bottom of the container B are closed by valves b<2>, b<3> mounted on a rod b<4>, and after the container is inserted in the generator, this rod is depressed to open the valves by screwing down a stud b<5> on the cover a<2>. The bottom of the generating-chamber is open to the water in the chamber D connected to the external water through the annular passage C formed around the float chamber A. By this arrangement, a sufficient supply of water is maintained if the buoy should ground. Water may be admitted to the chamber D either through a valve c, or through a pipe extending to a suitable height in the chamber, or through a non-return valve. -
