Abstract
233,977. Friedman, S. Oct. 25, 1924. Hair clippers. - A gauge for regulating the length of hair left uncut is slidably and adjustably mounted on a hair clipper in such a manner that the plane of the gauge is at all times at an angle to the plane of the clipper. The gauge has side walls with slots at an angle to its base which engage the clipper, and means, such as a screw serve to adjust the gauge relatively to the clipper. The gauge comprises a base 1, Figs. 5 and 8, formed at its forward end with teeth 2 preferably of greater depth than the cutting teeth of the clipper. The lower surface 4 of the gauge is rounded and the side walls 5 increase in height towards the rear of the gauge and are formed with channels 6 on their inner surfaces to engage the edges of the base plate of the clipper. Adjustment of the gauge is effected by means of a screw 11, Fig. 5, threaded through a cross bar .12 on the gauge and rotatably mounted in a yoke 10 adapted to be secured to the base of the clipper by screws passing through holes 9. The screw 11 may be operated by the driving shaft in the case of electrically-operated clippers, a reversible clutch being provided. In the hand-operated clipper shown in Fig. 2, a rod 17 projects from the gauge and is connected to a cross bar 18 slidable on pins 19 fixed to the clipper. The bar 18 is normally pressed away from the clipper by springs 20. Supported on an offset from the fixed handle 16 is a ratchet wheel 22 in the lower face of which is cut a cam groove in which engages a pin projecting from the rod 17. The movable handle 15 has spring-pressed pawls 25, 26, engaging the ratchet wheel which is thus rotated in one direction as the handles are manipulated. The engagement of the pin in the cam groove causes the gauge to move forward until the pin reaches a radial part of the groove, when the springs 20 return the gauge to the normal position. The rod 17 is provided with a series of openings to receive the pin, so that the limits of the movement of the gauge may be varied. In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and S, the gauge is adjustable by means of a screw 10<1> with a head 9<1> engaging a slot 8<1> formed in the base of the clipper and screwed through a threaded socket 13<1> secured to the gauge. The screw may be rotatably mounted in a bracket 30<1>, Fig. 7, and operated by a handle 35<1> through bevel wheels 33<1>, 31', or by means of a knurled head 29<1>, Fig. 8. Figs. 6 shows a gauge in which the base plate 28 is formed with guiding teeth 29 on its forward edge, and with side, walls 30 of considerable height at their rear ends and sloping downwardly towards the forward edge. The base of the gauge is rounded, and the teeth 29 are upwardly curved. A cross bar 33 connects the side walls at the rear and has a threaded opening 34 for an adjusting screw. The side walls have slots 35 to engage. the base plate of the clipper, and a roller 36 is arranged between the side walls to the rear of the base 28.
