' TICKET PUNCH Filed Nov. 22, 1959 'from standpoints of Patented Feb. 2b,- 1940 z191;3s2. v :TICKET PUNCH .Hubert Chauncy Hart, Unionville Oonn. v Application November 22,1939, iserial No. 305,719
' was. (or. 164-121) 3 My invention relates to hand-operated ticket punches and'aims toprovidean improved device of this character whichwill be advantageous manufacture, sale, use and repair.
In carrying out the above end, a furtherobject. is' to provide a novel die-cooperable with, the
,usual punch pin and detachably mounted to per flanges I 7 and I8 all rest upon mit the substitution of anew die for the old die when the latter has become so worn that the tool. will not cleanlypunch. v A further object is to' provide. a novel arrangement of levers whichwill operate the punch pin with such force that unusually heavy cardboard or the like maybe readily punched with ease. 7
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed,'description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying draw- Ii'igure 1 is a perspective view. Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sec tional view.
Figure 3 is a perspectiveview of the die.
A preferred construction has been illustrated and will be rather specifically described, with the understanding, however, thatv within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may bemade.
An elongated one-piece lever Ill is provided, the front portion of said lever constituting the fixed jaw I] of the punch, while the rear end is shaped to form a handle l2. The entire lever is preferably pressed or bent from one piece of sheet; metal as shown being given a longitudinally channeled formation. The vertical side flanges l3 project upwardly throughout the length of the lever and the portions of these flanges which project upwardly from the bottom plate [4 of the jaw- I I, are denoted at I3. This bottom plate I4 is also formed with an upwardly projecting front end flange 55 which merges into and is integrally joined to the side flanges 83. A pressed or stamped metal die plate I6 extends between the upper edges of the flanges 13, said die plate being provided with two downwardly projecting sideflanges IT, with a downwardly projecting rear end flange 'l8, and preferably with a downwardly projecting front end flange these various flanges being integrally joined to each other and being of the same height. The the bottom plate M of the jawl I ,e the two plates l4 and P6 and their flanges thus cooperating in forming a rethrough the closureplate v and the dieplate 16 'to "detachably secure thev stamped orpressed from sheet ceiver 19 for punched-out pieces of material.
ll of the die plate l6 lie against of the flanges I3 of the jaw and when the flange [8' is-em- The side flanges the inner sides bottom plate I 4 ployed, it'lie's' against the inner side of the front end flange l5 of said bottom plate l4. I
A discharge opening 29 is provided in the bottomplate [4 through which to empty the 1-9, anda closure plate opening 20. 'In the contents of the receiver 2| is provided for said present construction, a
2|, the bottom plate l4 entire die to-the jaw H and at the same time I forma pivot for the plate to be uncovered. a
The die plate I 6 is provided with-an opening 23 cooperable with a suitable punch pin 12-4 carried by the front end portion or jaw'25 of a relatively short lever 26. This lever is preferably pressed or stamped'from sheet metal, isreceived betw'een'the flanges [3 of the lever it and is fulcrumed between its ends at '21 to said flanges. The side flanges 2&"of the short lever 26 project downwardly and they are-preferably provided with slots 23 through which a stop pin '30 passes to limit'theswinging -movements of said lever '26,- said stoppin 3il-extending through openings in-the flanges i3 and having its ends upset. The fulcrum -21;may also be fastened in this same manner. I
A handle lever 3! is fulcrumed at its front end to the rear end of the short lever 2'6, as denoted at. 32, said handle lever 3|v being preferably metal and having a longitudinally channeled form with its side flanges 33 extending toward the lever ID.
the short lever 26 and through. the side flanges 2!, permitting'the latter to be swung aside when the openingfzll is The fulcrum 32 passes through theside flanges 28 of 33 oflever'3l and the ends of'said pin are suitably upset. I
A roller 34 is mounted on the handle lever 3| near its front end, said roller in the present disclosure being received between the flanges 33 and mounted on a pivot pin 35 which passes through openings in said flanges and has its-ends upset. "When lever 3i dle l2, the roller 34 rolls forwardly upon the bottom portion 36 of the channeled lever l0, causing said lever 3! to pry the rear end of the short lever 26 away from said bottom portion 36, thus moving the jaw 25 towardthe jaw II to drive the punch pin 24 through the material being punched andinto the opening 23. Each is swung toward the han single screw 22 passes I that the punch will not cleanly cut, it is an easy matter to remove the entire die plate It and substitute another, prolonging the life of the tool.
Any suitable provision may be made to insure opening of the punch when pressure upon the handles is relieved, and for this purpose, I have illustrated a spring 31 which extends over the fulcrum pin 21, under the stop pin 30, and is riveted at 38 to the bottom portion 36 of thelever in at its rear end, the front portion of said spring being simply free and confined between the side flanges 2B of the short lever 26.
If desired, the opening 23 may be threaded as shown, spaced the same distance from the front end of the die plate l6 that the screw hole 39, for screw 22, is spaced from the rear end of said die plate, and of the same diameter as said screw hole 39. Thus, instead of substituting a new die when opening 23 will no longer coact efiectively with pin 23, the old die plate may simply be removed and reversed, positioning the hole 39 for coaction with said pin and allowing reception of the screw 22 in the opening 23.
Excellent results have been'obtained from the details shown and described, and they are, therefore, preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim:
