HAND RULE PUNCH FOR PRINTERS Filed Sept. 25, 1952 Albert E. Neudauer lum'nlor United States Patent This invention relates to new and useful improvements in punching devices and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for punching slug'acco'm' modating slots in printingrules.
Another important object of the present invention is toprovide a punch that is secured to a graduate'd'base strip so that a printing "rule maybe held upon'the base strip and"pr0vide d"witha slot as the punch is actuated."
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hand rulepunch'forprinting rules involving a stop 1' member that is longitudinally adjustably secured'for a printing rule, whereby "slots' may be 'cut 'in the rule at preselected space intervals.
A still furthe'raim of the present'inv'ention is-to provide a hand rule punch for printers which is extremely: simple" and practical'in construction, strong and-reliablein use,
small and compact in structure, efiicient and durable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Otherobjects and advantages-residein' the detailsof construction and-operationas more-fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming 'part' hereof, wherein-"like numerals refer tolike parts'throughoutfand in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of'the'pre'sent invention;
Figure '2 is a perspective-view showing printingrul'es processed by the present invention, operatively engaged with printing slugs;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the section line 33 of Figure 1 and showing a printing rule in position to the base strip and punch;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a finished printing rule after the same has been provided with slots;
Figure 5 is a group sectional view of the upper and lower punch elements used in the invention;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the upper punch element taken substantially on the section line 6--6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of one type of slug used in conjunction with the printing rules slotted by the present invention;
Figure 8 is a modification of the printing slug; and
Figure 9 is a further modification of the printing slug.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral 10 represents an elongated rigid base strip having its rear longitudinal edge turned upwardly to form a guide ledge or flange 12. The upper face of the strip 10 is provided with longitudinally spaced, transverse graduations forming a scale 14.
The end portions of the strip 10 are provided with apertures 16 and will receive fasteners 18 which are engaged in the upper ends of cylindrical supporting feet or pins 20. The fiat lower ends of the pins 20 are intended to rest upon a horizontal surface to support the strip 10 in a horizontal position.
The fiatjaw end 22 of a lower lever or handle 24 is suitably secured tothe'unde'rsurface of str'ip 10, at substantially the"ceiite"r of 'the strip"10. Lever 24 extends at right angles 't'o'the strip 10 and 'is-channel shaped in a V vcross section to include spacedparallelvertical flanges 26 between which there is-received a jaw portion 28.
A horizontal pin 29 extends through flanges 26- and portion 28 to permitswinging or locking movement of 'jaw portion 28 relativetothe' jaw end 22.
An upper channel shaped lever or handle30 overlies and faces the lever 24 and includes a forward bifurcated end 32 that is pivoted,as at34, "to the rear end of jaw portion 28. A pit'rnan' or link 36 forming a fulcrum is terminally pivotally attached between the' flanges of the 1 ,levers 24v and 30: A coil spring'38 'is biased between the levers 24 and 30 to'urge the lever 30"raised relative to the lever 24 and hence-the jaw portion 28 spacedfrom the strip' 10 and jaw' end 22".
The forwardlyextending fiat'forward end 40'0f jaw- ,portion 28is providedwith a recess '42 that accom-- modates the reduced upper end portion 44 'of a male 'die' or punch element 46having'a T-shaped cutting lug 48" on'its lowerface." A "scr'e'w50 extends downwardly through an aperture in th'ee'n'd 40and is threaded into a .recess 52 in the punch'element'46 to secure the central part of punch element"46' against the fiat undersurface of the end 40.
T-sha'ped lug 48 is progressivelyreduc'e'din thickness from front to rear, as shown in Figured, so that as the .end"40 is' moveddownwardly,'the lower face of lug48 will be"substantially parallelto the base strip 10.
opening 561* The pu'n'ch' element 60is provided with" a lug 48 as the punch 'eleme'nt 46"is moved: downwardly relative to basestrip"10."
A pair of downwardly" facing"channel's"64' overlie the upperface' of" the basestrip lfland'parallel the" flange 12. The channels 64 are provided with attaching flanges 66 that are apertured to receive the upper ends of threaded studs or lugs 68. Studs 68 are suitably fixed on their lower ends to the strip 10 and extend upwardly from strip 10 to receivably engage wing nuts 70.
A stop member 72 is slidably adjustably mounted on the base strip 10 and coacts with flange 12 in retaining a printing rule R in position to the punch. Stop member 72 includes a rod 74 having a transverse stop 76 at one of its ends that extends perpendicular to the flange 12. The rod 74 is slidably received in the channels 64 and is clamped against the upper face of the strip 10 by the channels as the nuts 70 are tightened, in order to adjust the rod 74 longitudinally of the strip 10 for locating the stop 76 relative to a predetermined graduation of scale 14.
In practical use of the present invention, a printing rule R is placed over the strip 10 with one of its longitudinal edges resting against flange 12 and with one of its end edges engaging the stop 76. The beveled longitudinal edge E of rule R overlies the punch element 60 and underlies the male punch element 46. As the handle 30 is forced downwardly toward the handle 24, jaw portion 28 will be rocked to force the T-shaped lug 43 through the rule R and into the punch element 60. The rule R is moved longitudinally relative to the strip 10, after the stop member 72 has been adjusted, so that a plurality of longitudinally spaced T-shaped slots S may be formed in the beveled edge E of the rule R.
After a predetermined number of the rules R have been slotted, the flanges of T-shaped printing slugs are extended through registering slots in a group of the Patented Feb; 14,- e-
rules, as shown in Figure 2. The slugs may be of various types as shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 with the printing facings or edges thereof coplanar with the beveled edges E of the rules R. The printing face F1 of the slug Si shown in Figure 7 is V-shaped to permit printing of two parallel relatively thin lines; the printing face P2 of the slug S2 in Figure 8 is flat to print a wide line; and the printing face P3 of the slug S3, shown in Figure 9, is beveled to print a thin single line.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
