This invention relates to printing stamps, generally known as rubber stamps, for printing words or symbols from rubber type, and has for its objects a stamp having removable type, and
provisions whereby the type may be more easily and quickly set up for printing the desired words than heretofore and also, after printing, the type is more easily and quickly removed from the stamp and filed for future use.
Briefly described, my invention comprises an especially designed holder, preferably of metal, adapted to securely hold rows of type in accurate alignment for printing. The holder is provided with a handle for holding by a hand of the operative, as in any ordinary rubber stamp. The main improvements, however, are the provisions of special type aligning and securing means on the holder to permit the type to be easily and quickly assembled in the holder for printing, and to permit easy and quick removal of the type after printing, without the use of tweezers, but with the fingers only, the type being of special construction to coact with the holder for accurate aligning and positive securing therein and also formed and marked to facilitate the rapid handling thereof in setting up words and for filing away when removed from the holder. A special ling device constitutes a part of the invention along with the type and holder, the special construction of the type which assists in the aligning of the type in the holder, and retaining the same therein, also providing the means for aligning the type according to their charac.- teristics on the ling device.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing represent a perspective view, end view and side View of one form of the invention respectively, the latter two figures showing type completely assembled and the first showing type partially assembled and side of holder broken away, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the type used.
Figs. 5 and 6 are side and end views respectively of another form of the invention and Fig. 7 is one of the type used in the form.
Fig. 8 is a view of a ling device used for the type of either of above form of the invention.
In detail, the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 in the drawing, comprises a holder formed of a row of parallely disposed downwardly opening channel members I in side by side relation. A plate 2 is secured across the backs of the channels holding them together in the above relation, and a screw 3 extends perpendicularly upward fro-m the plate for attachment of a handle 4.

channels I are turned toward each other providing spaced guides 5 on opposite sides of each channel.
One end of each channel is left open while the opposite end thereof is partially closed by a strap 5 6 which extends across the ends of all of the channels and which strip is secured to the outer side of the outermost channel in the row as by riveting or soldering as at 6 or the end of each channel may be closed by an extension of the 10 web or one or both sides of each channel being bent across the end.
The strap 6 is provided with an opening 'I at the end of each channel.
Each type adapted for use in this holder com- 15 prises a body 8 of metal, wood, hard rubber, or other relatively hard rigid material, and a face 9 of rubber, which face includes a base I Il adapted for securement to an end of the body.
The body of each type is elongated and rece tangular in cross section, the cross sectional dimensions of the various type varying according to whether the letter of the face,'or the figure, or symbol, is narrow or wide in order that the spacing between the printing faces may be uniform, but the width of each type longitudinally of the letters thereon is constant for each row, and this width is equal to the distance between the sides of the channels I. Each of the type is also provided with grooves I I extending transversely of the body on the two opposite sides of the type which define the uniform width of the type, and these grooves are spaced from the upper end of the type substantially the depth of each of the channels so as to permit the. type to be inserted into the open ends of the channels with guides 5 slidably engaging the grooves. The type thus inserted may be slid along the grooves with successively entering type of various letters forming the desired words for later printing. Slugs, designated I2, formed similar to the type except without the type face, and of slightly shorter body are used to space or ll in a row in the ordinary manner.
Retaining the type set up in each row, and solid in the holder, is a bolt I3 which passes transversely through a hole I4 provided in the body of each type in alignment with the opening 'I in strap 6 at the end of each channel. The bolt is provided with a head I5 at one end and the opposite end which extends through opening 'I in the strap 6 is threaded and provided with a wing nut I6 outside the strap so that upon tightening the nut the head will draw against the last entered type within the channel and draw the rest of the type in the row tightly together toward the strap 6.
The guides 5 and bolt I3 thus coact to both align and retain the type in position in the holder.
In actual use, many persons find it more convenient to assemble the type on the bolt before inserting the type in the channel since with narrow type there is sometimes a tendency for the type to twist in the channel and fall out before the bolt is inserted, but either method may be used.
So that the operator may easily identify each of the type according to the character of the face, the letter character is stamped or otherwise marked on the side of the body as at I1, either above or below the opening I4, but preferably above for reasons later explained.
The other form of my invention as disclosed in Figs. 5 to '7 inclusive, comprises a holder, preferably of relatively heavy metal, and comprises a horizontally disposed elongated handle 20 bent downward at one end forming a vertically disposed run 2| secured to the upper end or formed integrally with a vertical end plate 22 disposed in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the handle. This end plate is provided with a row of spaced parallel vertically positioned plates 23 centrally stamped out as at 23v to reduce weight, said plates extending from one face of the end plate beneath the handle. The vertically disposed plates 23 will be designated guide plates to distinguish them from the end plate 22 since these guide plates are adapted to receive the type.
The type used in this form of the invention each comprises a body 24 of sheet metal bent in the form of a channel with a rubber printing t'ype 25 crimped in the channel at one end and a tab 26 with a printed character 21 therein crimped in the opposite end. The tab extends longitudinally above the body 8 and the face of the rubber type 25 is disposed below the opposite end of the body and lies in a plane perpendicular to vertical axis of the body.
The web of the channel forming the body of each of the type is provided with a vertical slot 28 adapted to nicely receive the guide plate 23 of the holder so the type may be slid onto the guide plate and succeeding type placed therein will form the desired words, each guide plate thus carrying a row of type forming several sentences as may be desired.
The type in this form are retained on the guide plates by means of clamps 29, one for each guide plate, the clamps being each provided with a clamping screw and thumb nut 30 adapted to tighten against the respective guide plate.
One of the features of the individual type of this form of my invention is the manner in which the rubber printing type 25 of each type is retained in position. The rubber type is formed with a shank portion 25 adaptedto fit within theohannel of the body 24 and immediately above the upper end of the shank 25 the sides of the channel are bent inwardly together, as at 3| to form an abutment so as to prevent the type 25 from being jammed up into the channel under use in printing. The sides of the channel which are on opposite sides of the shank are then compressed to tightly grip the shank and prevent the type from being separated from the body 24.
Both the type of Fig. 4 and Fig. 7, it will be seen, are provided with horizontal openings, I4 in Fig. 4 and 28 in Fig. 7.
It will be seen from the foregoing description of the two forms of type that the body o-f the type in each form is elongated, provided with' a transverse opening through the body, and a character indicia on the side of the body which indicia is not reversed, as the type face, but is normally positioned to be easily readable. In both forms of type the body is hard and rigid, and the printing face is of soft rubber suitable for inking from an ordinary stamp pad. Also the transverse openings in the body of each form is adapted to coact with the holder for aligning and holding the type therein.
The opening I4 in the form in Fig. 4 and the opening 28 in the form shown in Fig. '7 also provide means for aligning and supporting the type from pegs or rods 35 extending perpendicularly from an index board 36 as seen in Fig. 8. The rods 35 are-disposed in a horizontal row with a letter or symbol thereabove designating the character of the type supported thereon. Thus, it is apparent that the setting of the type in the holder in either form, and the filing of the type after removal from the holder, are rendered extremely simple and with practically no experience an operative is enabled to quickly and accurately set up or take down a form in the holder in a few minutes.
In printing, the devices are handled as any ordinary rubber stamp, rst inking the type from the pad and then impressing the inked type faces onto the sheet to be printed to transfer the impression.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made insofar as the details of construction are concerned, as for example, the guide plate 23 may be supplanted by an upper and a lower aligning and supporting rods in a vertical plane with corresponding openings in the body of the type without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim:-
1. In a hand stamp. a holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion provided with a printing face on one end, said body portion provided with an opening extending transversely thereof and the holder provided with a horizontally disposed bar adapted to extend through the opening in each type for forming a row of aligned type and means adapted to engage the bar and end type of the row independently of the holder for securing the type against movement on the bar with their printing faces arranged for simultaneous printing.
2. In a hand stamp, a holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion of hard, rigid material, a printing face of relatively soft resilient material secured on one end of said body portion, said body portion being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough, a bar rigid on the holder adapted to extend through the opening in each type for forming a row of type and means for securing the type against movement on the bar with their printing faces projecting outwardly of the hand stamp'arranged for simultaneous printing.
3. In a construction as defined in claim 2, said means being removably secured to the holder to provide for releasing the type for removal from the bar.
4. In a hand stamp, a holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion provided with a printing face on one end, said body portion being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough and the holder being provided with a horizontally disposed elongated member adapted to extend through the opening in each type for forming a row of type, means removably securing said elongated member to the holder whereby a row of type may be first assembled on the elongated member separate from the holder for subsequent mounting on the holder.
5. In a hand stamp, a holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion provided with a printing face on one end, said body being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough and the holder being provided with a horizontally disposed elongated member adapted to extend through the opening in each type for forming a row of type, guide meanspn said holder arranged and adapted to coact with said elongated member and type for aligning the r\ W of type with their printing faces arranged for simultaneous print- 6. In a combination as defined in claim 5, said guide means arranged and adapted to engage opposite sides of each\type.
7. In a combination as defmed\in claim 5, said guide means comprising parallel elongated plates disposed on opposite sides of said\el\ongated member and parallel therewith, each of sai-d type being provided with a groove on opposite\sides of the body extending transversely thereofand said plates each being formed-\to engage in said grooves respectively. a horizontally extending holder including means formed integral therewith arranged and adapted to engage a row of printing type for slidable movement of the type in a direction longitudinally of the row only, said means being free at one end for removal of the type therefrom, said type being formed to coact with said means for slidable engagement therewith and a removable locking member arranged and adapted to lock the type against removal from the free en-d of said means.
9. A hand stamp for printing type comprising a horizontally extending holder, detachable type 8. A hand stamp for printin type comprising\\ therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion being provided with a printing face on one end, said body portion being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough, a row of spaced parallel bars on said holder each adapted to pass through the opening in each type for forming a plurality of rows of type, and means adapted to engage each of the bars respectively and the end type of each row independently of the holder for securing the type of each row against movement on the bar longitudinally thereof.
10. A hand stamp for printing type comprising a horizontally extending holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body portion being provided with a printing face on one end, said body portion being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough, a row of spaced parallel bars on said holder each adapted to pass through the opening in each type for forming a plurality of rows of type and means for securing the type of each row against movement on the bar longitudinally thereof, said means comprising separate locking devices, one to each bar, and each device being arranged and adapted to removably engage a bar against movement at any desired point on said bar whereby a plurality of rows of type of different lengths may be secured on said bars.
11. In a hand stamp, a holder, detachable type therefor, each of said type comprising an elongated body of hard, rigid material, a printing face of relatively soft resilient material secured on lone end of said body portion, said body portion
