Patented Dec. 29, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SZAKO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PLANE.
Application filed April 4,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SzAKo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of 362 est 42d Street, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve-- ments in Planes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in woodworking planes, particularly rabbet planes of the type commonly termed fillister planes, especially well adapted for cross-grain planing, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a plane of this type with novel means for ensuring at all times an accurate working with or against the grain.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a plane of this character having a single side wall with adjustable gages for adjusting the plane and supporting the same with reference to the work-piece operated upon. A further object of the invention is the provision of a plane having an auxiliary, movable and adjustable base for the convenient removal of the chips.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a plane of this type equipped with novel and improved means for holding and guiding the cutter blade on its bed for allowing a ready adjustment of the same, and a locking of the parts in their adjusted positions.
It is furthermore, also an object of the in vention to provide a plane with means for permitting a limited lateral adjustment of the cutter and with means for regulating the tension of the engagement between blade and bed and for locking these parts in their adjusted positions.
These and other objects of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plane constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear end view of the plane 1924. Serial No. 704,160.
looking in the direction of arrows 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front end view of the plane looking in the direction of the arrows 33 Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a View of the cutter seen along line 14 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a cross-section on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view 0 of the plane.
Figures 7 and 8 are detail side and end views of a pawl and its finger.
Figure 9 is a detail elevation of an adjusting and locking bolt.
The body of the plane has only one single side wall or upright 10, the foot of which is secured to the rear base plate 11 by a dovetail or mortioed connection 13, and by a similar connection 13 to the front base 70 plate 12.
An auxiliary, movable base plate 14 is slidably mounted on plate 12, and carries near its outer end a post 15 through a smooth bore of which an adjusting screw 16 works 7 loosely which engages with its threaded rear end a bore 17 provided with interior thread in a post 18 on the stationary base 12.
A suitable, preferably hollow handle or grip member 19 is secured to the rear end of the base plate 11, provided for this purpose with a suitable boss, by means of a screw bolt 20 or the like.
Bosses 21 and 22 on the base plates 11 and 12 carry curved arms 23 and 2 1, the outer ends of which are connected by a side handle bar 25.
In the bosses 21 and 22 are also secured. below the arms 23 and 24, rods 26 and 27 to the outer ends of which brackets 28 and 29 are attached provided with heel pieces 30 and 31 or the like to which is attached a gage 32 adapted to engage the side of the work piece for guiding the longitudinal movement of the plane. A depth gage 33 is adjustably attached to the side wall 10 by the set screws 36 and 37, the shanks of which extend through elongated slots 34 and 35 in the upright arms of the gage, whereby the gage may be vertically adjusted to engage lUU shaft 40 (Fig. which is secured in ablock 41 set in an openlng of the side wall and adjustable therein within certain limits by means of a set screw 42 equipped with a knurled head 43.
A cutter bed 44 is secured to the side wall 10 and is adapted tocarry the cutter blade 45 having a lower oblique cutting edge 46 working in a similarly shaped cross-slot 47 in the base plate. In its'body, the blade 45 is provided with a longitudinal T-slot 48 al lowing the passage of a knurled knob or head 49 through the head of the T-slot which is attached to the upper end of an ad justing screw 50 working in bed 44, and
" allowing a limited adjustment of the cutter blade by the engagement of the head 49 with the walls of the slot in the blade.
A guard or guide plate 51 is adapted to rest on top of the cutter blade 45 to hold the same against its bed 44 and is connected with the'cutter 45 by m'eans of a screw 52, the head of which is located in a recess 53 of the bed 44 and accessible for adjustment by hand.
The pressure of the guard plate 51 upon the cutter blade can be regulated by means of a substantially convex shaped spring clamping plate 54, having its peripheral edge engaging the upper face of theguard and provided with a perforatedboss 55 in its center with a threadedinner wall in the perforation for engagement. by the threaded part of a bolt 56. The head 57 of the bolt rests upon plate 54, while its shank 56 extends through the plate 51, cutter 45 and bed 44; The lower end of the shank 56 is provided with a slot 58, adapted to receive the finger 59 attached as at 60, to the pawl 61 for locking the end of the bolt 56 in its adjusted position. The pawl isxpivotally attached to the bed 44, by brackets 60, whereby the pawl may be rocked to bring the finger into engagement with the'slot 58.
A limited lateral adjustment of the cutter blade is made possible by theprovision of adjusting screw 63 having a knurled head 64 and working with its inner end in a block 65 guided within the lower part of slot 4 8.
The operation of my. device will be en tirely clear from the above description.
After the proper adjustment of gage 33 to engage the top of the work piecewith its flange 38 for regulating the desired depth of the cut, and after adjustment offthe gage 32 to act a fence, the plane is ready 'for erally adjusted by the proper operation of operation. Chips clogging the rabbet and the slot in the base are conveniently and quickly removed by the proper removal of the auxiliary base 14 while the edges of the groove made in the work-piece are smoothened by the cutter roller 39 which will also prevent the work iece from splitting and splintering particu arly when working across the grain; if desired the cutter can be latscrew 63 within certain limits, and the tensionof the engagement between cutter blade and its bed can be properly regulated by the operation of bolt 56 which is then looked in adjusted position by the proper operation. of the pawl 61 to bring its finger 59 into engagement with the slot 58 of bolt 56.
It willbe clear that the construction shown may be modified in various ways as fall within the scope. of the appended claims without deviation from the principle and spirit of my invention.
