4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in dental instruments, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate expeditious and accurate marking of denture casts prior to setting of teeth therein, thus assuring that the teeth are set properly in a common horizontal plane.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient, accurate and expeditious operation, as aforesaid, in its adjustability to accommodate casts of different sizes, and its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as r shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention applied to a cast;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the same; and
Figures 4 and 5 are side elevational and top plan views, respectively, of a modified marking tool such as may be used in the invention.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a denture marking instrument which is designated generally by the reference character l0 and embodies in its construction a horizontal locating bar l2 which is adapted to be positioned transversely in so-called hamular notches l4 of a denture cast IS. A substantially L-shaped support member l8 includes a limb I 8a which is secured to an intermediate portion of the bar l2 and extends upwardly therefrom and a limb l8b extending forwardly and horizontally from the limb Illa. l
A vertically disposed fulcrum screw 20, provided witha lock nut 22, is carried by an intermediate portion of the support member I8 and extends through a longitudinal slot 24 provided in an oscillatory arm 26, whereby the latter is rotatable as well as slidable relative to the fulcrum element 20.
A pair of complemental, grooved guide members 2| are provided on a diametrically enlarged portion of the screw 20, these members being disposed in opposing, abutting relation above and below the arm 26, so as to guide and facili- I tate free sliding of the latter.
the underside of the free end portion of the support member I8 and is formed with a vertical, screw-threaded bore to accommodate an adjustable screw 30 which, in turn, is provided with an enlarged head or plate 32, This head is adapted to rest on the so-called papilla portion 34 of the cast I6 forwardly of the hamular notches l4, whereby, to sustain the limb l8b of the support member l8 in a horizontal position, as shown.
The outer end portion of the arm 2 carries a vertical stem 36 on which is slidably mounted a vertically adjustable block 38 having a set screw 40 engageable with a fiat side 42 on the stem 36, so that the block 38 may be locked in any desired position on the stem. The block 38 carries a hook-shaped inwardly projecting marking tool 44 having a sharp marking edge 46, so that when in operation the edge 46 of the tool 44 is brought in contact with the cast [6 and the arm 26 is swung from one side to the other while sustaining the tool 44 in engagement with the cast, a line 48 will be marked on the cast as shown in Figures 1 and 3. Assuming the cast IE to be positioned on a horizontal surface, the line 48 will be disposed in a horizontal plane and will thereby facilitate proper setting of teeth in the cast.
The accompanying Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a modified embodiment of the marking tool such as may be used in place of the block 38 and the tool 44, the modified tool comprising a block 50 equipped with a bore 52 and a set screw 40 for adjustable positioning on the aforementioned stem 36, while the cutting tool itself assumes the form of a disk 54 which is rotatably mounted in the block 50 on a pin 56 and has a sharp marking edge 58.
It will be noted that thelimb l8b is provided with a row of apertures l9 to selectively receive the fulcrum element 20, whereby adjustment is achieved for varying the horizontal distance of the fulcrum element from the locating bar l2.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A marking instrument for a denture cast having a rear portion provided with hamular notches and a front portion including a papilla, said instrument comprising a horiaontal locating bar adapted t'b The positioned transversely of the stated cast in said notches, a "substantially L- shaped support member including a first limb secured to an intermediate portion of said bar and extending upwardly therefrom anda second-limb extending horizontally and forwardly from the first limb, vertically adjustable papilla alcrutting means attached to and projecting; downwardly from said second limb, an upstanding fulcrum element provided on said second limb, an bscil' 4 said papilla abutting means comprise an internally screw-threaded boss secured to and extending downwardly from said second limb, an adjusting screw operatively threaded in said boss, and a papilla abutting plate secured to the lower end of said screw.
3. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said cast marking means include a block slidable on said rod, a locking screw provided on said block w ehgage the rear, andra-icastmarking element carried by said block.
v 4. The device as defined in claim 1 together with a flat tubular guide pivotally mounted on saidfulcrumelement, the slotted portion of said arm being slidable in said guide.
