Abstract

224,852. Jones, S. P. Nov. 17, 1923, [Convention date]. Hair clippers.-In a hair clipper of the type comprising a fixed blade and a reciprocating blade and driven by a flexible shaft, the driving mechanism comprises a cam adapted to reciprocate a member mounted to slide transverselv in the head of the clipper, and an oscillating lever engaging the said member at one end and the moving blade at the other. Tensioning means for the movable blade comprise a transverse arched leaf spring mounted in the head above the blade. Preferably, an adjustable roller or supporting member is mounted on the lower part of the head. The clipper comprises a head 10, Fig. 6, from the upper part of which extends a tubular handle 11 The head has a bore 12 continuous with the bore of the handle, and a transverse chamber 13 intersecting the bore 12. Mounted in the bore are bushes 14 having circumferential grease grooves 15. A shaft 18 is mounted in the bushes 14 and is provided with collars 19 bearing against the ends thereof. The bushes 14 have radial ports 15<1> to conduct grease from the grooves to the shaft 18. A worm 20 secured to the shaft 18 engages a worm wheel 22 to which is secured a cam wheel 23, Fig. 7, the worm and cam wheels having trunnions 24 bearing in screw-caps 25 which close the ends of the chamber 13. These caps are suitably dished to afford a convenient grip for the thumb and first finger. A transverse bore 26 in the head 10 below the chamber 13 is provided to house a shuttle bar 27. A vertical pin 28 on this bar carries a roller 29 which extends through a slot into the chamber 13 and engages a groove in the cam wheel, causing the bar to reciprocate when the cam wheel is rotated. The forward underside of the head is inclined upwardly and a toothed cutter blade 34, Fig. 6, is secured thereto by screws. A toothed reciprocating blade 36 is mounted on the blade 34, both blades being dished in the usual manner. The head 10 has an overhanging lip 37 cut back over the blade 34 to receive the blade 36. To hold the blades in contact, a leaf spring 38, Fig. 9, is seated in a recess 39 in the underside of the lip 37 and bears at its ends on the blade 36. A screw 40 serves to adjust the pressure of the spring. A lever 41, Fig. 6, pivoted on a. pin 43, is mounted in a slot in the head 10 and engages in a slot 44 in the shuttle bar 27. On the forward end of the lever is formed a boss 45, Fig. 8. engaging in a notch 46 in the rear part of the blade 36. A roller 47. Fig. 6, having circumferential flanges 49 is extended up into the head and held in position mounted in a yoke 48, which has a shank 50 by a set screw 51 which permits the roller to be adjusted relatively to the head to form a support and gauge in using the clipper. The shaft 18 mav have a slot 52 to receive the end of a flexible driving shaft 53, To adapt the clipper for any size of flexible shaft, a universal coupling is provided comprising an annular channel 54 having apertures through which small balls project' into the bore 12, the apertures being of such size that the balls will not pass through. A coiled spring is located in the channel and presses the balls inwardly into engagement with a groove 53<1> in the shaft 53.
