To all whom it may concern:

the city of Chicago, in the county'of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certaln' new and useful Improvements in Hair- Clippers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that type of hair clippers or cutters, which are more particularly designed and intended for use by a person in the operation of cutting or clipping his own hair, and it consists in certain novel features and peculiarities, of the construction, combination, arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a hair clipping or cutting de vice of the above mentioned general character, which, by reason of the novel shape, and operative arrangement and construction of the parts thereof, can be more easily and accurately manipulated when employed by a person in cutting his own hair, than has heretofore been-afforded, and without danger of cutting or injuring the scalp.

Another object is to furnish ahair clipper or cutter of an extremely simple and inexpensive construction, and one possessing great strength, durability and efliciency,

with its parts so made and arranged as to enable them to be easily assembled, or when desired, disassembled for the purpose of repairs or for grinding or sharpening the knives or cutters.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the following. description and explanation.

The reference numeral 12 designates the base or body carrying handle of the clipper; which is slightly. curved from the other handle 13 of the device 'and is provided on its outwardly bowed portion at about the middle thereof with a ring-like projection 14 for the reception of the thumb of the hand in which the device is held. The other handle 13 issimilarly provided on its outer with its lower portion slightly rounded.

The base or bod t k16 is by preference made integrally with t e handle 12 and has at its end or juncture with the handle an upright or projection 17 which is provided at its free end with a pair of spaced apart prongs 18 between which prongs the handle 13 is pivotally mounted-near-its front end. The upright or projection 17 is provided below the pivot 19 for the handle 13 with an opening 20 which is located in parallelism with the flat innersurface of the baseor body 16 which member is provided at its front or outer end with another upright or projection 21 which has an opening 22 in .lon 'tudinal alinement with the opening 20 I in t e upright 17 of the base or body.'

Secured to each of the sides of the base or body 16 preferably by means of screws 23 ,is a plate 24 each of which extends from the front or free endof the body to the front portion of the projection 17 and as shown are located'at angles to one another.- The upper or free edge of each of the plates 24 is provided with a row of knives or cutters 25 which have their outer surfaces inwardly beveled while their inner surfaces are fiat and in a plane with the inner surface of the plate on which said cutters are located.

Each of the plates 24 is provided with a pair of spaced apart inwardly projecting pins 26 arranged in a line parallel with the inner surface of the base 16 and located at a suitable distance from the cutters or knives 25 on said plates. Each of the plates 24 is provided about midway between the pins or projections 26 with a countersunk opening 27 in which is located the head 28 of a screw 30, see Figs. 5, 7 and 8 of the drawings. These screws project inwardly at a right angle to their respective plates and at angles to one another as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

Mounted between the plates 24 and just above the inner surface of the base 16 is a plunger which is designated as a whole by the numeral 31 and said plunger has in its rear portion a-transversely or vertically disposed recess 32-for the reception of a cam shaped extension 33 with which the front portion of the handle member 13 is provided.

Extended rearwardly from the rear portion laterally extended arm 35 whose outer surfaces are beveled to correspond with the inner surfaces of the plates 24 against which surfaces said arms contact nad are adapted to be guided in their reciprocations. Screwed into a suitable opening in the plunger 31 is a rod or shaft 36 which extends forwardly and through the opening 22 in the projection 21 on the front portion of the body of the device.

Surrounding the rod 36 is a spiral spring 37 one end of which rests against the projection 21 and the other against the front surface of the plunger 31 between the arms 35 thereof. Longitudinally mounted on the inner surface of each of the side plates 24 of the body is a movable cutter bar 38 each of which is provided on its inner surface with a longitudinally extended raised portion"39 which fit and operate in channels 40 with which each of the guide bars 41 for said cutter bars is provided on its inner surface as is clearly shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 6 of the drawings. Each of the bars 38 is provided with a longitudinally extended slot 42 for the reception of the pins 26 and screws 30 the former of which also act as guides for said movable bars. Each of these bars is provided in itsouter, edge with a series of spaced apart teeth or-knives 43 which are also on the inner and flat surfaces of the knives 25 of the side plates 24 and in their back and forth movements cooperate with said knives in clipping or cutting the hair. Each of the movable bars 38 is provided in its inner edge at its middle with a recess 44 for engagement with the arms 35 of the plunger. Each of the guide bars 41 is provided at its middle with an opening through which one of the screws 30 is extended and each of said bars by preference has in its edge adjacent to the arms 35 of the plunger an elongated recess for the operation of said arms.

Longitudinally mounted on the outer surface of each of the guide bars 41 is a bow spring 45 which is held in place by means of milled nuts 46 adjustably mounted on the inner ends of the screw bolts 30. By this arrangement, it is manifest that the pressure of the guide bars 41 on the movable cutter bars 38 can be nicely regulated.

From the foregoing, and by reference to the drawings, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that assuming the parts to device can be placed against the neck of the user with the knives or cutters extended upwardly, when by pressing; the movable handle member 13 toward the other handle member the movable cutter bars 38 will be forced forwardly thus causing the knives thereof to co-a'ct with the knives of .the side plate 24 adjacent to the head and thus clip hair interposed between said knives -or cutters. As the side plates of the body are ar ranged thereon at angles to one another thus forming a substantially U-shaped body in cross-section, it is evident that the implement can be rocked or manipulated so as to clip the hair at the desired length, from a veryvclose cut to a longer cut, as the implement is moved upwardly on the head.

By my novel construction, it is obvious that the parts can be easily detached in order to permit sharpenin of the knives on the fixed plates 24 an on the movable plates.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a hair clipper, the combination with a body or base having a handlemember extended from one end thereof and provided with detachablydiverging sides each having a row-of spaced apart knives at its free edge, saidbase having a pair of projections, each having a transverse opening therein, of a handle member fulcrumed on one of the projections and provided at its inner end with a cam arm extendedv toward the base, a plunger located between said projections for longitudinal movement and having a rearwardly extended projection located in 1,342,097 l I i 3 plunger also having laterally disposed arms on its sides, a movable bar having a row of knives at one of its edges to co-act with the knives of the sides of said body mounted for 15 reciprocal movement on the inner surfaces of each of said body sides and detachably engaging the arms of said plunger, and
