ESHUE K. HOWELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR- CLIPPER.
Application filed August so, mes.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Esrrun K. I-Iownnn, a citizen of Mesopotamia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, hzwe invented certain nea and useful Improvements in Hair Clippers, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs tot-hat general class of devices known as hair clippers, and relates particularly to a simple form of clipper particularly adapted for use for self hair cutting; that is to say, for use for the operator in clipping his own hair.
The invention has among its objects the production of a. deviceof the kind described that is simple, compact, durable, convenient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
It has particularly as an object the production of a clipper of the kind described particularly adapted for the purpose specilied, having blades so mounted that they may be reversed and the operator may conveniently operate the instrument with either hand.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be. obvious to those skilled .in the art from the disclosures herein given.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1. is a sectional view tially on line 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view tially on line of Fig. 1.;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view tially on line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is a sectional view tially on line 44l-. of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view similar to. Fig. 3, illustrating the application of an adjustment blade; and
Fig. (i is a sectional view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown, 1 represents a head member provided with a handle 2 of the desired size, shape and material. The head member 1 is provided with a reciprocating cutter plate a normally maintained in place by a cooperating cutter plate 3, the cutter plate 4 being operable by means of a handle 5 of the desired size and shape connected therewith, as
taken substantaken substantaken substantaken substan- Serial No. 660,198.
will be hereinafter described. plates and a are provided with the teeth 6 and 7 constructed in the usual manner, the hair being engaged between the cutting teeth of the two blades and cut when the one blade is moved. as indicated at 8, and carries a plate actuating member 9 which is. provided with a shank 1O operatively connected to the handle 5, so that when the handle is operated member 9 will be actuated. As shown, handle 5 is provided with an end 11 which is pivotally secured at 12 to the member 1 ad jacent the handle 2, 13 and 1% being a nut and washer respectively arranged to coact with the handle when the same is operated. shown, a spring 15 is arranged in the chan'iber S and arranged to cooperate with the handle 5 in controlling the operation of the member 9, the handle moving the member in one direction and the spring retrieving it or moving it in the opposite direction. Member 9 is provided with a lug 15 adapted to engage the plate l which is provided with openings 16 and 16, there being a plurality of openings to permit reversing of the'plate, as will be described. Plate 1 is also provided with an opening 17. Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, the head 1 is provided with guide members 19 and 19 arranged to cooperate with the cutter plate at at the groove 18. The parts are maintained in assembled relation by the bolt 22 which extends through opening 17 in plate a and is provided with an enlarged head 23 engaging at the outer face of the plate 3, 21 being a nut arranged on the threaded end of the bolt. I preferably provide a spring washer 25 arranged between the nut 2-1 and the head so that the stationary plate or cover plate 3 is maintained firmly in place and yet is yielding to some extent and will not bind. As shown, plate 3 is mounted directly on the plate 4, the rear edge, however, being maintained in spaced relation with the head 1 by means of the lug 26. I also prefer to provide the plate 3 with the pins 27 arranged to cooperate with the extension 28 on plate 4 and limit the lQClPl'OCatlOll of the plate.
lVhen the handles 2 and 5 are gripped or squeezed together, the blade 1 will be moved toward the handle end of the head through the actuating and connecting mechanism described, plate 3 ren'iaining stationary. As
The cutter i l The head 1 is chambered,
the pressure is released on the two handles, spring 15 will retract or retrieve the cutter l until the same engages the stop 27. The device. is used by manipulating the handles in the manner described. thereby causing blade -l to be reciprocated back and forth, so that hair projecting between the teeth is cut.
As was: before mentioned. the present device is particularly intended as a convenient tool for one to clip or cut his own hair. For convenience in operation. it is preterred to so construct the same that the blades may be turned to the opposite side of the head as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 3. To reverse the. blades. it only necessary to remove the nut 24 and turn the head and plate to the opposite side so that blade 4. engages the guide 19. the other parts being similarly reversed. It will be noted that owing to the space or opening 17 in the plate l, the bolt passing through the plates does not interfere with the operation of the device. It' desired. the additional handle parts 29 may be provided on the handles 2 and 5 to a'liord a more convenient grip.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and (3. I have illustrated how an additional gauge plate 31 provided with teeth 32 meeting with the teeth 6 on plate at may be provided. This plate is shown snapped in place and secured by the flanges 33. Its purpose is to space the blades from the body. thereby preventing the hair from being cut too short. It may be made of any desired thickness. and in fact the device may be provided with guards or members 31 of various thickness so as to give different cuts to the hair.
Owing to the novel arrangement of the handles and cutters, and to the fact that the cutters may be reversed. it is possible for the user to cut or clip his own hair in a very etlicient and satisfactory manner. as he may change hands or change the stroke of cut to make the same most convenient in cutting. In fact it may be handled much like a comb. The device is not only particularly convenient for the use. of men and children. but is also particularly convenient for ladies" use, enabling them to clip their own hair as desired. It is also particularly convenient for trimming the heard, as it may be handled very convenientl and in such a manner that the operator can see his face clearly. thereby securing an even and finished cut.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial moditications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit o-t my invention: hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting n'iyselt to the exact form, construc tion. arrangen'ient and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioncd.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, an elongated body member having a handle portion thereon. clipper blades adapted to be reversibly arranged on said body member at one end thereof so as to present their cutting edges at either side. and operating means connected to said handle to actuate said blades.
2. ln combination, an elongated body member having a pair ot parallel side guides. a stationary blade adapted to be reversibly arranged on said body member and spaced above said guide means so that its cutting edge may be adjacent either side guide. a movable clipper blade adapted to be arranged on said body member between said stationary blade and guide means and having means thereon for sliding intercugagement with said guide means. a rod slidable through said body member and having a lug thereon engageable with said movable blade. and a handle pivoted to said body member and operably connected to said rod to actuate the same.
3. In combination. an elongated body member having a pair of parallel side guides thereon, a reversible blade adapted to be arranged on said body member and spaced from said guide means thereon so that the cutting edge may be adjacent either side of the body member, a movable clipper blade adapted to be arranged between said stationary blade and guide means and having m ans thereon for interengagenlent with either of said guide means. a rod slidable through said body member and engageable with said movable blade. a handle pivoted to said body member and operably connected to said rod to actuate the same. a spring for normally urging the rod in one direction. means tor adjusting the tension of said sprin and means for limiting the reciprocatm'y movement of said movable blade.
4. ln combination a body member having side guides. a stationary blade reversibly arranged on said body member and spaced from said guides. a movable clipping blade arranged on said body member and having means thereon tor sliding intercugagement with said side guides. a rod slidingly engaging said body member having a lug thereon engaging with said movable blade and a handle pivoted to said body member operably connected to said rod to actuate the same.
In testin'iony whereof. I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two su scribing witnesses.
ESHIIE K. H )lY IClll}.
