Description

Aug. 2, 1938.
G. KOTZIN DUPLEX GLIPPERS Filed June l WM WM Patented Aug. 2, 1938 yUNITED YSTATES PATENT OFFECE Claims.
e This invention relates to improvements in mechanism for operating duplex hair clippers and has for its object to provide a simple, eicient and inexpensive means for reciprocating the angularly disposed set of hair cutting clippers which forms a vital feature of my new duplex clippers.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts disclosed in the drawing and specilication and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. t
In the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, k
Figure 1 is a plan View of one form of my invention, partly in section,
Figure 2 is a sectional View of the clipper comb showing the clipper blades mounted angularly thereupon,
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of my invention,
Figure 4 is a plan view, largely in section of another type of my invention to be described,
Figure 5, is a cross section taken through the comb and its associated blade to be described, on line B-B of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic View showing the position of the angular clippers of my implement upon a head,
Figure '7 is a top plan View of Figure 4,
Figure 8 is a side elevation of Figure 4,
Figure 9 is a front elevation of Figure 4,
Figure 10 is a front elevation of Figure 4,
Figure 1l is a fragmental sectional elevation of the casing showing the interior parts of the comb and blades, taken on line C-C of Figure 7 looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 12 is a rear elevation of Figure 4.
In accordance with my invention I disclose a hair cutting implement characterized by the fact that it is provided with an angular V-shaped comb upon whose divergent sides two cutter clipa xed bearing I'I within the casing. Handle bar I3 is thus mounted upon pivot pin I6 as a fulcrum so as to swing thereupon. A fixed curved handle bar I9 is formed upon casing Ill, and projects in confronting relationship with respect to handle 5 bar I3.
The V-shaped clipper comb has divergent sides 21, 28 formed with cutter teeth, and the pair of identically similar cutting clipper blades 24, are slidably mounted upon these sides, carrying 10 for this purpose, integral tongues 49 which slide in elongated grooves or tracks 5U formed upon the angular sides of the comb; the flat angular terminal cheeks 29, and 3l) of the casing I0 conne the blades in the comb and against displacement therefrom; the oppositely terminal lugs or extremities of the comb overlie flat adjacent parts of the casing thereby permitting set screws or the like fasteners 4I to removably secure the casing upon the comb. 20
Pins on levers I4, I5 are designated respectively 20, 2| and project in slotted ears or pairs of spaced pins 22, 23 projecting outwardly from the clipper blades 2Q, 25; it will be noted when pin 2I of lever I4 is disposed at` the outer end of the ear or pair 25 of pins 23, pin 20 of lever I5 is disposed at the inner end of ear or pair of pins 22. Hence when Y both handle bars I3, I9 are squeezed and drawn towards each other cranks or levers I4, I5 move both blades reciprocatingly in the same direction; the swinging handle bar I3 has a curved lug 3| in whose socket 32 is tted a curved post 33 carried by an ear 34 xed within casing I0; a contractile spring P is secured at one end to lug 3l and is also coiled around post 33 and secured thereto. This spring is put under tension when handle bars I 3, I9 are squeezed; during the reciprocation of the two blades hairs are cut which extend from end to end of the comb teeth, the operator applying pressure in one direction upon the handle bars while the spring 33 applies pressure upon them in a counter direction. The casing I0 has its top closed by means of a at wall I0 shown in Fig. 7; and the oppositely slanting front edges of this wall IB are designated respectively X and Y 45 and are spaced in parallel relation from the similarly sloping combs of the casing to provide a slit.
'Ihe form of mechanism and implement shown in Figures 4 to 12 will now be described. Here 50 the casing is mounted with respect to the angular sides of the comb with the positioned blades in the same manner just now described in connection with Figure' l. However the mechanism for imparting reciprocating movement to both blades is such as to cause the blades to move towards and from each other instead of in the same direction, The curved handle bars 35,36 project into slot I2 of casing Ill, being crossed herein and mortised as at S to permit a pin 3% to pivot both bars together so they rest upon bridging arm 36' in this slot, this pin 3S passing thru this arm and an ear 31 upc-n casing lll. The handle bars 35 and 36 have integral hook-shaped finger holds 48. The inner ends of the bars 35, 36 are pivoted by pins 41 to the outer ends of crossed bell-crank levers 44, 45 which are pivoted at 46' together, and which have outermost pins 43 projecting into slotted ears 42 carried respectively by blades 24, 25, whose teeth 26 have the usual cutting edges. When the two handle bars are squeezed and pressed together in one direction, spring 46 separating the pivoted ends of bars 35, 36 and levers 44, 45 is compressed, and then levers 44, 45 swing to separate the blades slidingly so the hairs that previously entered the registering recesses of comb I6 designated M and those designated N of the blades are now cut as the blades are side swiped; Vwhen spring 46 relaxes the blades are moved back toinitial position. My present invention eliminates the skilled use ofscissors for cutting hair, and with steps in hair as the clippers which trim the hair will do its work lightly and smoothly while those which cut the hair will cut deeplytherein, as one clipper bearsv flat on the head to cut deeply while the other bears at the proper pitch to trim deep- Yly at the apex of the comb and gradually trims the hair more lightly because located farther away.
What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the kind described consisting of oppositely sloping fixed combs forming a continuous serrated surface, comb-shaped hair cutting blades designed in unison to make a rectilinear traverse longitudinally of the comb from end to end thereof, and lever-actuated means for operating said blades.
2. In combination a pair or" oppositely and angularly disposed hair clipping cutters adapted to move towards and from each other, a unitary xed comb extending in overlying contact with said cutters and hand operated means adapted to impart motion to the cutters.
3. A hair clipper consisting of a casing having opposing angular combs formed upon the sides thereof and having cutter teeth thereon, a pair ofi-lat blades overlying the angular comb sides and having cutter teeth designed to have a side swipe against the 'adjacent teeth of the comb sides, a xed handie bar on the casing, a movable handle bar swingingly carried by said casing, resilient means controlling the swinging of the movable handle bar relatively toV the fixed bar, and crank means actuated by'said movable handle bar and engaging said cutter blades to impart to the latter simultaneous side swipes against the sides of the comb.
4. In combinati-on with a V-shaped cutter comb, a pair of oppositely-arranged movable.A hair Y cutting clippers having a rcutting swipe against the comb trom the apex towards the extremities thereof.
5. As a new article of manufacture a segmental clipper casing having a front wall inclining in opposite directions from the center so as t0V GODFREY KOTZIN.
