Description
Nov. 9, 1954 A. T. SCHEIWER HAIR-CUTTING AND TRIMMING DEVICE Filed Nov. 8, 1951 INVENTOR. W 1 WM BY 6% XML FIG-5,
United States Patent HAIR-CUTTING AND TRINHVIING DEVICE Albert T Scheiwer, Erie, Pa.
Application November 8, 1951, Serial No. 255,420
Claims. (Cl. 30195) This invention relates generally to hair cutting devices and more particularly to a combined comb and thinning cutter for trimming hair.
In cutting hair, the first step is the back combing of the hair and the second step is to remove the bulk of the hair with a conventional clipper. The final and most important step is the thinning of the hair and the trimming thereof. It is necessary that the barber hold the comb in his left hand and a thinning shears in the other and then operate both of them in perfect harmony. This operation requires a very skilled man to perform a decent job. It is now a practical impossibility for the ordinary person to perform the thinning and trimming operation without leaving steps in the hair. The thinning shears is used with the comb to taper a strand of hair. The operation of a comb in one hand and a thinning shears in the other at an elevated position is very tirin It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to provide a combined comb and thinning cutter which is simple in construction, economical in cost, economical in manufacture, and easy to operate.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined comb and thinning cutter which works in perfect unison and which may be operated by one hand.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined comb and thinning cutter which may be operated by a relatively inexperienced person to trim a person's hair.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a plan view of my novel combined comb and thinning cutter;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my novel combined comb and thinning cutter;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the head of the cutter shown in Fig. l
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the head of the cutter shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of head for my novel cutter.
Referring now to the drawings, I show in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive a base plate 1 having curved comb teeth 2. An intermediate cutting and bearing plate 3 is juxtaposed on the base plate 1. The intermediate plate 3 has laterally spaced cutting bars 5 above and in parallel relationship with the comb teeth 2 of the base plate 1. The cutting bars 5 are engaged by transversely extending, spaced, parallel teeth 6 having V-slots 6a cut in the outer ends thereof mounted on support bars 7 which extend parallel to the comb teeth 2 and the cutter bars 5. The support bars 7 are attached to a transversely movable plate 8 slidable on the top of the intermediate plate 3. The support bars 7 are attached to the movable plate 8 by fastening members 10. The movable plate 8 has a recessed portion 9 on the back side thereof for receiving the end 11 of a cam member 12 disposed on the end of a handle 13. The movable plate 8 has transversely aligned, rectangular shaped slots 25 for receiving guiding pins 14 attached to the intermediate plate 3 by screw members 15.
The base portion 16 of a stationary handle 17 is attached to the intermediate plate 3 by screw members 18. The base portion 16 of the stationary handle 17 has a transversely extending, bored, cylindrical portion 19 internally threaded on one end 21 thereof for nesting Patented Nov. 9, 1954 2 a coil spring (not shown) which is engaged by an extending portion 261 of the cam member 12 to urge the mov able handle '13 away from the stationary handle 17. A screw 26 is threadably engaged with the threaded end 21 of the member 19 to adjust the tension of the spring therein.
The base portion 16 of the handle 17 has an upwardly extending threaded shaft 22 for receiving an apertured cover 23 which is secured by a wing nut 24 in threadable engagement with the threaded shaft 22.
Any conventional form of mechanism may be used for moving the movable plate 8 with the cutter teeth 6 thereon to and fro in translation. The gist of my invention lies in the combination of the curved comb teeth with the particular arrangement of the cutter bars and transversely aligned cutter teeth.
My invention is particularly utilized after the bulk of the hair has been removed by a conventional clippers. Strands of hair are then selected and the comb teeth 2 are run through the strands while the movable handle 13 is operated, thereby moving the transverse plate 8 to and fro to move the ends 6a of the thinning teeth 6 over the edges of the cutter bars 5 on the intermediate plate 3 to thin out and taper the hair. A comparatively inexperienced operator can perform a very good trimming job with my novel cutting and trimming device. By spacing the cutting teeth a predetermined distance apart, only a predetermined amount of hair in a given strand is cut, thereby providing a thinning action. The V-shaped slots 6a in the ends of the cutting teeth 6 are provided in order that hair may be bunched and a better cutting action results.
In Fig. 5, I show a modified form of my novel combined comb and thinning cutter wherein the cutter bars 5 in Fig. l on the intermediate plate 3 are replaced by spaced, stationary, thinning cutters 30 transversely aligned with spaced thinning cutters 31 attached to a movable plate 32 which is moved to and fro in the same manner as the plate 8 in Fig. 1. The only change in the modified form of my invention is a new intermediate plate 33 with transversely extending, spaced cutter bars 30 at right angles to the comb teeth 34 instead of the cutter bars 5 parallel with the comb teeth 2 as shown in Fig. 1. Both the cutter bars 30 and the thinning cutters 31 have the distal ends 35 and 36 thereof slotted in V-shape in order to bunch the hair therebetween to provide a better cutting action.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that I have provided a novel combined comb and thinning cutter for trimming hair which has a base with curved comb teeth to eliminate steps in the hair, spaced thinning cutters disposed transversely to the comb teeth, and a novel arrangement of parts for trimming and thinning out the hair and tapering the sides thereof for use by an inexperienced person.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or from the scope of the appended claims.
