2 Claims. (Cl. 30-43) This invention relates generally to shaving devices and in particular, shaving devices of the type which are commonly known as electric dry shavers. This application is an improvement of the disclosure in my patent, No. 2,323,084, dated June 29, 1943.
There are no adjustable means on the head of a dry shaver to prevent the skin from passing through the slots thereof into the path of the cutter teeth. Dry shavers on the market today must design guard members with slots therein of such thickness that the tenderest of skins will not pass therethrough. It is, therefore, necessary to design the heads of these present day dry shavers for the man with the lightest skin texture. A man with a medium or heavy heard or with a heavier skin texture is not able to get a suitable shave with present dry shavers on the market.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to overcome the above and other defects in electric dry shavers and it is more particularly an object of my invention to provide an electric dry shaver which is simple in construction, economical in cost, easy to operate, easy to adjust, andwhich has long life and efficient operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide an electric dry shaver with novel slots in the guard member thereof and with secondary adjustable guard members secured thereon movable over the slotted portion of the guard member.
Another object of my invention is to provide an electric dry shaver capable of adjustment to permit shearing of the hair at different distances from the skin. Another object of my invention is to provide end covers on the ends of the head of a dry shaver to hold the sheared hairs in the head of the shaver until the cutting operations are completed.
Another obiect of my invention is to provide an electric dry shaver with secondary guard members and means for operating the secondary guard members in unison.
Another object of my invention is to provide an electric dry shaver with secondary guard members, means for operating the secondary guard members in unison, and means for setting and locking the secondary guard members in a given set position.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my novel electric dry shaver;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my novel electric dry shaver with the end covers for the head in an operative position;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of my novel electric dry shaver with the end covers on the head removed for the cleaning of the hairs from the head;

Referring now to the drawings, I show in Figs. 1 to 15 inclusive an electric dry shaver having a handle formed from mating halves I and 2 preferably made of a suitable plastic material. The motor ,(not shown) of the shaver is conventional and it operates an oscillatable lever 3 (Fig. 15). The outer end 4 of the oscillatable lever 3 is received in a slot 5 formed in a depending portion 6 of a cutter 1. The cutter has outwardly extending guiding ribs or flanges 8 which engage the inner side of the primary guard member I3 of my novel dry shaver. The cutter I has a tooth edged, arcuate portion M with V-shaped slots which move in engagement with the underside Ma of the face of the guard member I3 beneath the series of slots I5 (Figs. 6, 7, and 8). The slots I5 may be arranged in staggered relationship as shown in the drawings or the may be aligned one with the other without departing from my invention.
I prefer to form the slots I5 in the primary head I3 with the sides thereof diverging outwardly as shown in Fig. 6. The slots I5 vary in width about ten thousandths'of an inch to approximately twenty thousandths of an inch at the outer ends thereof. Thus, when the secondary guard members I6 are moved away from the center line of the primary head I3, the width of the slots I5 provided for cutting hair increases. The slots in the leading edge I8a of the secondary guard members I5 are approximately twentyfive thousandths of an inch in width and they are aligned with the slots I5 over which they move in the primary guard member I3. My novel electric shaving device will operate efficiently without the use of the slots in the slotted portions I8 of the secondary guard members I6 but I prefer to use the aligned slots therein. The opposed secondary guard members I 6 on the primary guard member l3 embrace the primary guard member I3 with the slotted edges I8 thereof overlying the portions of the slots I5 in the primary head I3. It will be noted that the arcuate shaped base portion of the primary guard member I3 engaged by the arcuate shaped portion I 4 of the cutter I is thicker in the center than at the outer edges thereof so that as the secondary guard members l6 move outwardly, the thickness of the base portion of the secondary guard members IE will decrease to give a closer shave. The arcuate shaped base portion is approximately four thousandths to five thousandths of an inch in thickness at the extremities thereof and approximately fourteen to fifteen thousandths of an inch in the center thereof.
The secondary guard members I6 have a slotted portion I8 with a leading edge I8a which is tapered to a point so as to provide comb teeth for lifting the hair on the face to be shaved. A second, upwardly extending comb portion IE2) is also formed on the leading edge portion I8 of the secondary guard members I6 for combing out the hair to be shaved before it is engaged by the opposite leading edged comb IBa. A third comb I80 is provided on the trailing edge opposite to the leading edge I8a of the secondary guard members Is to provide a further comb for combing out the hair to be engaged by the cutter I.
The secondary guard members II; are held in position against the primary guard member I3 by arcuate shaped spring brackets I9 secured to a support 20 by screws 2 I, the support 26 supporting the primary guard member I3. I have shown the periphery of the cam 26 divided into twenty graduations or divisions 22 so that the secondary guard members I6 may be adjusted to twenty different positions in relation to the slots I5 in the primary guard member I 3. It will be evident that any number of divisions may be provided without departing from my invention. The cam wheel 25 is in the form of a frustum of a cone. Arcuate shaped cam slots 25 are formed in the face of the cam wheel 26 as shown in Fig. 13 and the headed ends 24 of the arms 23. ext n ing from the secondary guard members I6 move therein. Upon rotation of the cam wheel 26, the arms 23 attached to the secondary guard members I6 are moved inwardly and/ or outwardly an equal distance in unison thereby moving the secondary guard members I6 around the primary guard member I3 toward or away from each other. The arcuate shaped spring brackets I9 urge the secondary guard members I6 against the primary guard member 13 of the shaver at all times. The portions of the divisions 22 on the cam wheel 26 are visible through a window 90 in upper mating half I. The cam wheel 26 is engageable by a human finger through the window 90 to rotate same. Recesses 27 are provided on the inner periphery 28 of the cam wheel 26 for engagement by the end 34 of a spring urged finger 29. The finger 29 is attached by means of shafts 30 to a button 32 which extends outwardly from the upper mating half I of my novel dry shaver. Coil springs 33 as shown in Fig. 14 urge the button 32 outwardly which in turn urges the end 34 of the finger 29 into locking engagement with one of the slots 21 of the cam wheel 26 thus locking the cam wheel 26 in any desired position.
Longitudinally extending grooves 55 are formed by the mating halves I and 2 on opposite sides of my novel shaving device for nesting straight depending ends 52 of end covers 53 for covering the open ends of the member I3 to hold out hairs therein. The end covers 53 have raised, transversely grooved, finger engaging portions 54 for moving the end covers 53 longitudinally in the grooves 56. The depending ends 52 of the end covers 53 have inwardly extending flanged heads 55 which extend into and move in a slot 56 in the bottoms '5! of the grooves on each side of the shaver. Spaced, inwardly extending, projecting ribs 58 are engaged by the reversely bent portions 59 of a spring bracket 66.
One end of each of the brackets 50 is in the form of a flat spring 62 which engages the heads on the end covers 53 to hold them in position in the slots 50 on each side of the shaver. The end covers 53 are normally in a position covering the ends of the guard member I3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When it is desired to remove the cut hairs in the guard member I3, the raised portions 54 of the covers 53 are engaged by a human finger and pushed forwardly whereupon the depending ends 52 of the end covers 53 extend outwardly from the shaver sufficiently to clear the sides thereof so that they may be rotated to a position as shown in Fig. 3 wherein the hairs may be removed from the head I 3. To return the end covers 53 to a position covering the ends of the head I3, it is merely necessary that they be rotated so that the depending end thereof is in longitudinal alignment with the grooves 50 and the heads 55 thereon are pressed inwardly against the force of the spring 62 on the spring bracket 60 and it is then moved longitudinally in the slot 56 in the side of the shaver wherein it is held securely in the grooves 50 on each side of the shaver.
It will be apparent that as the secondary guard members 15 are moved with their exposed edges I8 closer to or farther away from each other, a lesser or a greater portion of the slots I5 will be covered or uncovered. The slots in the secondary guard members I6 are in substantial alignment with the slots I5 in the guard member I3 but they are slightly wider than the slots i5 so that hair may be cut by the slots I5 even though the secondary guard members l6 engage each other.
In the operation of my novel shaving device, the end covers 53 are disposed in a position adjacent opposite ends of the guard member l3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cam wheel 26 is then rotated by the use of thefinger 29 after the button 32 is pressed downwardly so that the end 34 of the finger 29 releases the cam wheel 26. The secondary guard members IB are moved to a position with the leading edges l8 thereof substantially in engagement with each other as shown in Fig. 8 and shaving is started in this position. It is seldom that the skin of a person is so finely textured or the hair on such a persons face would be so fine as to require my novel shaver in this position. The secondary guard members I B are then moved outwardly one graduation at a time until the required thickness of the face of the primary guard member I3 is found for proper cutting of the beard and the proper width of slot is found which is the most desirable. After each rotation of the cam wheel 26, the button 32 is released and the finger 29 engages an internal groove 21 on the cam wheel 26 to lock it in a predetermined position by the finger 29 when the desired thickness and width of slot is obtained. Sometimes it is desirable to have a predetermined width and thickness of slot to out long hairs on the neck and another thickness and width of slot I5 to cut the hairs on the side of a face. This is all determined by a trial and error method on the part of the user 01' my novel shaver. The comb teeth lBa, l8b, and I80 on the leading edges l8 of the secondary guard members [6 provide several combing surfaces to pull the hairs outwardly from the face so that they may be cut by the oscillating cutter I. The cutter I is moved to and fro by the arm 3 leading to a motor which is conventional.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that I have provided a novel electric shaver of the adjustable type which provides simple means for varying the depth to which the skin extends towards the cutter member through the slots of a primary guard member of a dry shaver thereby providing efllcient means for shaving closer to or farther away from the skin as desired, which provides means for twenty or more adjustments to provide slots in the guard member of twenty or more varying widths or thicknesses, which provides means for locking the secondary guard members in a predetermined position on the primary guard member in a number of varied positions, and which provides novel connections for end covers on the end of the cutting head of a shaver to retain hair therein until the shaving operation is completed.

What I claim is:
1. In a device of the type described, a member having a series of slots arranged widthwise thereof and defining a series of relatively thin and narrow cutter bars, a pair of opposed, adjustable, arcuate shaped guards on said member for, progressively covering over the end portions of said slots therein, arms extending outwardly from said guards, a cam wheel with indicia on the periphery thereof having cam slots in one side thereof for receiving the ends of said projections of said guards and equally spaced grooves on the inner side of a recessed portion on the opposite side thereof, a case in which said elements are disposed having an opening for inspecting the indicia on the periphery of said wheel, a finger engaging the inner grooved portion of said cam wheel for locking it in a predetermined position, a spring for urging said finger into the inner grooved portion of said cam wheel, and a handle on said finger extending outwardly through an opening in said case whereby it may be manually pressed inwardly to release said wheel from said finger to adjust said guards.
2. An electrical dry shaver, in combination, a cylindrical head comprising a transversely slotted cylindrical member, adjustable, arcuate shaped, secondary guard members having at their adjacent lateral edges thereof slots to coincide with the slotted portions of said cylindrical member, a cutter member movable internally of the slotted portion of said cylindrical member, arms extending outwardly from said secondary guard members, a cam wheel having cam slots in one side thereof for receiving the ends of said arms for moving said guard members around said cylindrical member and having a recessed portion on the opposite side thereof with teeth on the inner periphery thereof, a case for housing all of said elements having apertures therein, a spring urged finger engaging said internal teeth on said cam wheel extending through an opening in said case and being manually operable from the outside of said case for releasing said cam wheel, and springs for urging said finger into engagement with the internal teeth on said cam wheel to lock same.
