Spindle-driving apparatus; spindle apparatus.- In spindle apparatus for spinning and winding artificial silk and the like the spindle a which carries the spinning box is connected by means of a clutch f, which is operated by moving the spindle vertically, to a sleeve o mounted in bearings n, n<1> and driven by a Whittle belt s or like means from a pulley t which is driven by gearing w from a line shaft v. The mounting of the sleeve eliminates side thrust on the spindle. The spindle is moved vertically to operate the clutch by a manually-operated device, such as a cam g on a short shaft h, and is mounted in plain or ball bearings b, c, or in any type of self-centring flexible bearings. The belt may drive two spindles, and two belts s, s<1> may be used to drive two spindles on each side of the frame. The gearing w is enclosed in a casing w<2> containing lubricant, and a ball or roller bearing may engage a neck on the boss of the gear wheel and a wall of the casing. A drip tray l is suspended from the bracket j which carries the cam g.
