Abstract

520,494. Photographic developing apparatus. BRENBARGER, W. V., and LEUVEN, J. F. VAN. Oct. 24, 1938, No. 30696. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1937. [Class 98 (ii)] In kinematograph film developing apparatus, more especially for successive treatments, the film travels in frictional contact with upper and lower sets of rollers, and is driven by one or more rollers in frictional engagement with some of the upper rollers so that the first set moves at a slower speed than succeeding sets, the upper rollers being so mounted that they move away from the drive rollers if the tension of the film becomes abnormal. As shown, the film 15 passes first between tensioning rollers 19, 22 of which 19 is on a fixed shaft and 22 turns on an arm 24 on a fixed pivot 25 ; thence to the first set of upper and lower rollers 13, 14 ; and thereafter to succeeding sets 13, 14. In each set, several upper rollers 13 and lower rollers 14 are mounted on each of the shafts 41 and 30 respectively, and the film travels round each set in a helical path while receiving one of its succession of treatments. The lower shafts 30 are mounted in frames 32 fixedly suspended by rods 33 from the fixed frame 12. The upper shafts 41 are mounted on saddles 40 vertically slidable on the rods 33 and suspended from the frame 12 by rods cushioned by springs 45, so that the rollers 13 may move downwards against the action of the springs should the tension of the film become abnormal. A main shaft 61 drives through bevel gearing the shafts 50 of rollers 16, 16<SP>1</SP> in frictional engagement with upper rollers 13, each succeeding set being driven at a faster speed either by adaptation of the bevel gear ratios or, as shown, by successive increase of the diameters of the driving rollers 16, 16'.
