UNITED STATES ANDREW HUMPHREY, OF GLENLYON, PENNSYLVANIA.
.A'JI'lAClI-IIVIENJ. FOR SOUND-BEPRODUCING. MACHINES.
Application filed May 28,
The object of this invention is to provide, in connection with a sound reproducing machine, of standard construction, in which a disk record is employed, means for exhibiting pictures, or moving pictures, and a traveling element, carrying thereon the words applied to the music whichmay be reproduced from the disk record.
'A further object is to provide a traveling element, both sides of which carry wording of the character indicated.
A further objectis to provide particular driving means for the various moving elements of the apparatus.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application, I
Figure 1 shows the apparatus in front elevation, with parts in vertical section, the cover of the cabinet being open.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure of Figure 1, or more particularly, that portion thereof which relates to the picture projecting means, and the sound reproducing means, irrespective of the traveling element, although a portion of the drive is illustrated in the central portion of the view.
Figure 3 is a detail view, in section, the section being on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line 1-4: of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view in vertical section thru the mounting and operating means for the traveling element.
Figure 6 is a perspective view, showing a portion of the traveling element, with wording applied to both sides thereof.
Figure 7 is a section thru the winding elements for the traveling device, said device or strip also appearing in section.
A cabinet of a sound reproducing machine is shown conventionally and is designated 10, and a cover therefor is designated 12, a portion of the operative mechanism being mounted in the cover as illustrated in Figure 1. A vertical shaft or spindle is driven by any suitable motor, and mounts the table 16 on which the .disk record 17 is to be placed.
A sound box is shown at 18, a tone arm 19%. Serial 170,112,355.
at 19, and a needle mounting device is designated 20, the needle per se being shown at 21. Carried by spindle 15 is a pulley 23,
around which a belt passes, this belt also passing under rollers 26 and around a pulley 27 mounted in a bracket 28 in the cover 12. A shaft 29 for pulley 27 mounts a beveled gear wheel 30 meshing with beveled gear wheel 31 on shaft 32. The shaft last named mounts a spool 33 for winding one end of the traveling element or strip 35, adapted to carry on opposite sides thereof, wording to be applied to the music being reproduced from the disk 17. If a reversible disk is employed, it may be assumed that the wording on opposite sides of the strip 35 corresponds, respectively, with the opposite SIdGS Of the disk. An upper spool 38 for winding the upper end of the strip 35, is mounted on shaft 39 operating in Suitable bearings, and it will be observed from Figure 5 that shafts 32 and 39 are each provided with an annular groove 10 for receive mg the end of a spring held pin such as 11. The spring is designated 12, in each case, and 1S held in position within a suitable bore by means of threaded and slotted plug 43. Knobs such as 15' are carried by the outer ends of shafts 32 and 39 and permit of the manual control thereof and of the strip 35. Automatic control or drive fro-m the record driving means includes the belt 25, which is resilient, and associated mechanism, previously described. The words on opposite sides of strip 35 are readable incident to change in the direction of travel, as the wording reads from the ends of element 35.
The cover 12 is retained in vertical posit10n by means of the cooperating devices 18 and 19, shown especially in Figures 3 and 4,
one of these devices being slotted, and the olthter carrying a pin which operates in the s o A picture projecting device, or moving picture apparatus is shown conventionally, and is designated 50, being mounted in cover 12, and operating in the usual manner of operation for this class of machines. The moving element of the picture apparatus is to be driven by shaft 54 carrying beveled gear wheel 55 meshing with wheel 56 carrying pulley 57. This pulley 57 is driven by belt 58 passing over pulley 27 on shaft 29, forming a part of the drive previously described. The gearing and belts are designed to produce a noiseless drive, and the spools til) are detachable for placing a new paper strip in position, to correspond with the record being used.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a. device of the class described, record driving means for a sound reproducing machine a traveling Word carrying element, means for driving said element from the driving means first named, driving means for a moving picture machine, and devices for imparting motion to the driving means last named from the driving means of the traveling element.
means for driving said element from the driving means first named driving means for a moving picture machine, and devices for imparting motion to the driving means last named from the driving means of the traveling element, and an element movable into position for protecting the record and its driving means and housing and supporting the remainder of the driving mechanism.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANDRE? IIUMPHREY.
