232,947. Selden, C. C., and Pearson, R. D. April 28, 1924, [Convention date]. Spraying travelling materials.-In apparatus for applying to plant fibre, particularly cotton, a quantity of its natural or substitute oil, moisture, or both, to increase its strength and life and to improve its finish, to reduce waste and fly, and to facilitate spinning, an atomizer 7 is connected to tanks 11, 12, 13, supplying respectively oil, water or steam, and air. The atomized oil &c. passes by means of a fan 22 to a housing 6 shown attached to a carding machine 1, from which the fibres in sheet form pass to a container 2. A valve 24 controls the quantity of oil &c. used, the excess passing to a condenser 26, suitable pipes and valves being provided. In a modification, the sheet of fibres is surrounded by a narrow housing 6, Fig. 5, in two parts hinged at 37. The atomizer 7 supplies the mixture to a lower funnel 43 provided with baffles 46, a slide valve 44 controlling the quantity of oil &c. supplied to the fibres. An outlet 47 for the vapour condensates is provided. The chamber 20, Fig. 2, and oil tank 11 may be heated.
