Fluid - friction vibration-dampers.- In a fly-wheel of the type containing liquid, the liquid, preferably of high specific gravity, is contained in cells which communicate by restricted openings in such a manner that the liquid can flow from one cell to another under the influence of its inertia. The liquid may be subjected to gas or vapour pressure, and the fly-wheel may be cooled, e.g. by means of jackets. The device, which is particularly applicable for internal-combustion motors, may be combined with the ordinary fly-wheel. The cells 6, 6<1>, 6<11>, Fig. 1, may be arranged in ring form and communicate by openings 11, alternately as opposite sides of the wheel. Radial passages 12 communicating with the arms may be formed in one or all of the spokes of the fly-wheel. The cells may be of rectangular. round or polygonal section. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cells are arranged in pairs of U-form, the liquid oscillating from one leg to the other. The pairs of cells may communicate by openings 11. The frequency of the oscillations of the liquid may be arranged to be the same as that of the torsional vibrations of the shaft at critical speeds.
