" Crown corks " and the like, applying.-A bottle capping machine comprises a frame 2 carrying a reservoir 1 for gas under pressure, a plug 8 at the bottom of the reservoir, 'an outer or clinching piston 10 slidable in the plug 8 and supporting the usual capping mechanism, an inner or compression piston 13 slidable in the clinching piston 10, and a spring- pressed plunger 14 mounted in the compression piston 13. A small quantity of oil above the pistons maintains an hermetic seal between them and the wall of the reservoir 1. In operation a cap, such as a " crown cork " 26, is placed on a support 25 on a guide nut 12 mounted on a neckcarrying support 11 on the clinching piston 10. The bottle 27 is raised, or the capping head is lowered so that the cap is pressed betwen the plunger 14 and the bottle mouth, continued movement raising the plunger until a ring 24 mounted on it abuts against and raises the compression piston 13 thereby substituting its pressure for that of the spring 16 of the plunger 14 and pressing the cap on to the bottle mouth. The pressure on the cap increases as the movement continues until the cap, pressing against a throat 23 in the member 11, is crimped around the bottle neck, when further movement merely raises the clinching piston 10.
