Abstract

29,032. Rose Bros., [Edmonston, W. 0.]. Dec. 23. Capsules, applying.-A bottle-capping machine, operated by fluid pressure and automatically adjustable for bottles of varying height, semi-automatic in operation, and provided with cushioning-means to prevent injury to the bottles, is shown in Fig. 1. The bottle 5 is placed upon a standard 2, and a capsule is inserted in a recess in the end of a tubular plunger 61. A foot-operated lever 52 is then depressed and, by means of its connecting-rod 47, Fig. 2, and hooked arm 45, draws down the slide valve 41 to the position shown, the lug 48 on the arm 45 then striking the side of the valve chamber and thus tilting the arm sideways so that it strikes a projection on the supply valve 35 and opens the valve. The pressure fluid then passes into the cylinder and forces the pistons 59, 67 down on to the bottle neck. The plunger 69, of the inner piston 67, engages with the capsule and holds it upon the bottle neck, which stops the downward movement of the plunger. The tubular plunger 61 continues to move downwards and crimps the capsule around the bottle neck. As the pressure in the cylinder rises, a spring-pressed valve 74 opens, the valve stem tilts a bent lever 83 having one arm normally acting as a stop to a piston 77 on the slide valve stem, the piston thus freed is raised by the pressure on its lower surface and raises the slide valve to its top position. The pressure fluid is thus admitted to the bottom end of the cylinder, and the capsuling-plungers are raised and the capsuled bottle is removed. The footlever is next released, and its connecting-rod 47 moves upwards until the hooked arm 45 strikes a cam-surface 53, which causes the hook to engage the slide valve ready for the next operation. Cushioning - chambers 18, 54 are provided at the ends of the cylinder.
