Abstract

Apparatus for the synthetic production of methyl alcohol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen is made of or coated with a metal or alloy which does not form carbonyl compounds and can withstand the temperature conditions. The metals and alloys mentioned are copper, silver, aluminium and their alloys, special steels containing substantial proportions of chromium, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum or vanadium, such as "steel V2A," and also the last-named metals themselves; iron, cobalt and nickel are excluded. Not only are the hot parts of the apparatus so made or coated, but the same also applies to the less hot or cold parts, though metals of a lower melting-point such as zinc, tin, lead and their alloys or even non-metallic coatings such as asphalt and enamel may then be used. In order to protect the walls of the apparatus against the action of the hot compressed hydrogen, a perforated or permeable steel mantle may be provided for the reaction tube, which latter may for instance be of copper or of iron lined inside or coated with the protective material. Specification 20488/13 is referred to.ALSO:Apparatus for the synthetic production of methyl alcohol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen is made of or coated with a metal or alloy which does not form carbonyl compounds and can withstand the temperature conditions.
