Description

2307882 1 BOARD Currently known board is made up with cores of timber
sheet or chipboard which have a limited life. It is used for a very specific purpose, for example appearance.
The applicant has developed a board of compound material, of the sandwich type, consisting of differentiated layers with the core different from the facing, providing a surface appearance of natural timber and a number of high performance features making it suitable for a very wide range of applications in construction, building, domestic fittings, decoration, etc. and providing it with optimum aging and durability.
According to this invention there is provided board, having a frontface and backface which comprises two sheets of laminated timber with a thickness of between 0.4 and 1.5 nim., and treated with a high dry extract phenolic resin, and having between them a core consisting of sheets of high substance absorbent cellulose sheets impregnated with phenolic resin, and on the timber sheet of the frontface an absorbent cellulose translucent/transparent film impregnated with polymerizing resins.
Its surfaces have a wide range of finishes in natural timbers and in different shades.
It is possible to offer various types of designs for the finishes.
It should be stressed that its good characteristics, both surface (waterproof, resistant to abrasion, cracking, UVA rays etc.) and those of the whole of the sandwich (physicochemical, mechanical, structural, etc.) make it a material which is highly suitable for use in the external environment (it is resistant to rain, ice, snow and sun, etc.).
In order to gain a better understanding of the present invention, a preferential form of the invention, susceptible of incidental changes which do not detract from its basis, is shown 2 in the drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a board in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a cutaway and exploded view of a practical realisation of the board with the different layers separated from one another to provide greater clarity.
Referring to the drawings a board 1 incorporates two sheets of timber mj, M2 laminated into a panel with a thickness e of each sheet of between 0.4 and 1.5 mm., treatedimpregnated with an alcohol-based high dry-extract >50% phenol-forTnaldehyde resin.
Other conditions for the timber sheets mj,M2are conventional such as stability, degree of humidity and the unrolling process.
If fire resistance of the board 1 is desired, the sheets m,,M2are treated by immersion in fire-proofing salts (arnmonium-phosphate) before treating with the phenol-formaldehyde resins mentioned above.
The board 1 has a face C, which is visible and a backfaceC2which may or may not be visible.
A group f of various films or laminates f,, f2, f3 are applied to the timber sheet m I, these being absorbent and lucent or parent cellulose sheets so that the user u can see, from the outside, the grain of the timber sheet m, and, where appropriate, that of the back surface sheet C2 can be similarly applied as will be described.
Some sheets f,, f2 have an aesthetic function and therefore they are impregnated with phenolic resins or other equivalent polymerizing resins together with the desired pigment, from absolute transparency to a given colour, with the corresponding transition zones, for 3 example, if it were wished to see the colour of the sheetM2, filMS fl, f2would be used with a transparent (colourless) pigment and, if an intermediate shade were required, a transparent film f, and another film f2pigmented with colour could be used, and so on in succession.
Other film sheets such as f3may have a utility ftmction and therefore the resins and the fillers may be different (silicon, heat-proofing, etc.., for example).
If the board 1 is intended to withstand abrasion, the film f, is impregnated with melamine and silicon; if it is intended that the colours should not degrade under the action of UVA rays, an acrylic resin is used in impregnating the film fi.
The core a consists of packages kI, k2... K of high-substance cellulose absorbent sheets, for example 190 gr/M2 at origin, impregnated with phenolic resin. These sheets are known as kraft board.
Packages kI, k2... K consist, as an example, of ten sheets (the number of "packages" and sheets/package depends on the final thickness for the core and the desired degree of uniformity) placed alternately with angular variations between the packages so that the cellulose fibres of the core a as a whole are multi-directional.
The backfaceC2consists of a group f of films f 1 f2, f3which can be made up in the same way as the films f,, f2, f3of face C, or in a similar manner, as has been explained, or in the case when the backfaceC2 is intended to be glued, fixed or applied to the floor, partition or wall, at least one sheet f l of the kraft type, out of those mentioned above as being used for the core a, is placed on the timber sheetM2.
Face C, and backfaceC2 can have designs or embossed patterns. This is achieved by means of moulds, with the design to be printed, placed between the board manufacturing 4 press plate and the board 1.
Preferably two or three films f,, f2, f3 are used on the face C,.
The conditions for pressing the board 1 with the degrees of humidity, temperatures and press time can be conventional.
The board 1 is cut into sections of a size and shape meeting the needs of the user and in accordance with the intended application.
