Abstract

229,869. Brown, S. G. March 12, 1924. Gyroscopic compasses.-In a compass in which gravitational control is effected by the flow of liquid between two containers, damping about the horizontal axis is produced by the action on the same liquid of an extraneous source of power. The vessels e, e<1> are carried on opposite sides of the gyrocasing c and are connected by a tube g through which the mercury f flows to effect the gravitational control when the casing tilts. A nozzle d through which air from within the casing can escape terminates adjacent the open ends of tubes h, h<1> which are connected respectively to the tops of the vessels e, e<1>. The differential flow of air through the two tubes when a tilt of the casing occurs causes a displacement of the liquid, the necessary lag required to produce the desired damping being obtained by adjustment of the valves i, i<1>.
