Abstract

229,852. Michalski, R. Feb. 19, 1924. Digging-apparatus.-In a shovel of the kind which is filled by pushing it under the heap of material and is then raised and transported to the discharging point, the shovel is supported at two different points by two hoisting elements, one of which is used for raising the shovel and the other for imparting to it the necessary inclination for charging and discharging. The shovel S, Fig. 1, is pivoted in blocks s slidably mounted in arms 11 depending from a traveller T mounted on a bridge crane 1. Rods 12 pivoted to the rear end of the shovel are hinged to racks 13 which are slidable in guides 14 and are engaged by pinions 15. A sleeve 16<1>, Fig. 3, mounted on the shaft 16 carrying the pinions 15, is connected by chain- and-sprocket gearing 17, 18, 19 with a shaft 20 on which are mounted chain wheels 21 engaging chains 22 attached to the blocks s. A chain 30 stretched from side-to-side of the crane is engaged by a chain wheel 27 which, when put into gear with a motor M by actuating a clutch 32, causes the traveller T and shovel S to move along the bridge 10. After the shovel has been filled, the wheel 27 is uncoupled and the clutch 32 moved to cause the shaft 20 to be driven. The clutch 35 is then moved to couple the adjacent gear 17 to the shaft 16, and the shovel is raised. The ratio of the gears 17, 19 is such that when the shovel reaches a given height, it will also have tilted sufficiently to discharge, the contents. In a modification the rods 12 and racks 13 are replaced by chains or wire ropes and chain wheels &c. In another modification, in addition to hoisting ropes 22, Fig. 6, at the front and rack-and-pinion hoisting mechanism at the rear, rack-and-pinion hoisting mechanism is connected to the centre of the shovel. A shaft 47 mounted on the shovel is connected by links 46 to pins 45 mounted in guide blocks 44 attached to racks 64, 65, Fig. 8. Racks 49, 50 pivoted to a shaft 48 mounted near the centre of the shovel are guided by rollers 51 on a bar 52 and gear with pinions 53, 55 on a shaft 54. A lever 66 is provided for sliding the shaft 54 so that either the pinion 53 engages the spurwheel 57 or the pinion 55 meshes with tl.e spurwheel 58. The wheels 57, 58 are geared to spurwheels 60 on the shaft 61 which are attached to pinions 62, 63 engaging racks 64, 65. When the gears 53, 57 are engaged, the shovel attains the discharging inclination at I, Fig. 6, but when the gears 55, 58 are coupled, discharge does not occur until the shovel has reached position II. When the lever 66 is in central position, the racks 49, 50 are both out of action. In another modification suitable for large shovels, a double rack is provided at each side of the shovel, and two sets of gears of different values are provided for engaging the racks.
