rlhis invention relates to door-cleaning apparatus, and more particularly to an apparatus for cleaning the doors of colte Ovens.
Coke oven doors are removed by means of door-handling mechanisms of two types. If the door to be removed is at the coke discharge side of the oven, the door-removing apparatus is simply an independent machine accomplishing no other function, the machine being shifted after removal of the door to one side of the door Opening so that the coke may be removed therefrom. The doors at the pusher side'of the oven, or that side at which a ram is introduced to force the coke from the Oven, are removed by door: handling mechanism which is carried by the pusher carriage. The pusher carriage must, of course, be shifted in order that the doorhandling mechanism may be moved out of r alignment with the door and the pusher ram brought into alignment with the door opening.
An important Object of this invention is the provision of scraper apparatus for scraping the edges of the door which operates automatically either through the transverse movement of the carriage Or as an incident to a normal Operation of the carriage oran element thereof occurring Ain the period between removal and replacementof the door.
A further vand more specific Object of the invention is to provide in combination with a door-removing and supporting carriage which is shifted after removing the door and while supporting the same, first out of and then into alignment with the doorway, scrapers acting upon the sides of the door, these Scrapers moving longitudinally of the door in one direction as the carriage moves the door out of alignment with the doorway, and in the opposite direction when the carriage returns the door into alignment with the doorway.

In'accordance with our invention, we support from the frame of carriage l0 as at 30, vand fromthe base 14 as at31 a pair of vertically-extending guides 32 at present shown as comprising I-beams Thesel beams are spaced apart a distance sucient to permit passage of the door therebetween and are arranged atopposite sides of the door as it i's moved to and from the door opening bythe door-handling -mechanism hereinbefore described. From :the main frame member of the rcarriage we support a ydoor bottom scraper 33, this scrapervbeingarran'ged between the verticalfguides 32 and being at present shown 'as comprising a `metallic block pivoted at a point-above its center as at 34 and having on its .upper edge a series of longitudinally-extending ribs 35. The excess weight of the lower end of thesblock 33 tends to keep the ribs 35 in engagement with the lower door edge as the door is moved into and out of the opening. Between the up- .rightk guides at the upper ends thereof we support an upper edge scraper 36, this scraper simply comprising a weighted block snpported from a cross member 37, connecting the upper ends of the guides, through links 38. The slides 39 of guides 32 are connected to one another through a flexible element 42y which passes from one slide over sheaves 43 atthe tops of the guides downvrrWardly along the second guide to the other of theslides,over sheaves 44 and 45 at the bottoms ofthe guidesv about a drum 46 back over asheave 47 at the bottom of the adjacent guide and thence to the first-mentioned slide. It will be obvious that as the drum 46 is rotated slides 39fwill move in opposite directions so that when one of these slides is at the top of'its associated guide the other of the slides is at the bottomthereof.
Drum 46 is driven from the gearing train 48 of the carriage-drive ythrough a pinion 49 and .a clutch shaft y50,'the clutch being designated at 5l and is at present shown as of the jaw-type, the movable jaw being designated Vat 52 and being shifted through a'lever 53. The door cleaning apparatus associated with the pusher differs from thatrjust described only .in parts rendered necessary by the machine design employed in the pusher carriage. Tn the pusher carriage, the carriage body 65 whilevmovable along tracks 66 as in the case of the discharge doorremoving carriage, is shifted therealong only a relatively short distance after the door ly that necessary to align thepusher ram 67 with thedoor opening from which the door has been removed. This distance does not afford a suiiicient movement to enable proper operation of the scrapers and it is, accordingly, necessary to adopta further means hereinafter set forth.`
Likewise, on such pusher carriage the doorremoving means is somewhat modified due to the fact that the oven at this side thereof is defined by an outstanding shelf or bench 53 which projects out from 'the face of the oven for a distance approximating seven feet. This door-handling apparatus, accordingly, comprises a carrier bar 69 mounted to move transversely of the carriage and to and from the oven, suitable guides 70 being provided for this bar. The forward end of the bar mounts a head 7l, the upper and lower ends of which pivotally mount door hooks 72 adapted to swing in the same vertical plane and connected as by link 73 for simultaneous movement. In this construction it is feasible to have the slides move in the same direction on the guides. l/Vhere this is done, however, it is necessary that theV stop mechanism controlling the drive of the scrapers be duplicated at the .top and bottom of the doorebut it need bel arranged in the path of only one of the scrapers. ln the present instance we have shown a pivoted arm 73 disposed near the bottom of one of the guides and a pivoted lever 7 9 connected to the top of the other of the guides, the arm and lever being connected through a l'nk 80. We claim: e ki 1.111 apparatusfor cleaninofthe doors of coke. ovensand'the like, a carriage, means supported from the carriage and constructed and a ranged to engage an ovendoor and removeand replace the same, and to support the door in a given position when removed, mechanism associated vvith said carriage and adapted to be reversely operated after removal of a door by said door-carrying mechanism and prior to replacement thereof,
means to operate said mechanism, shaft,
means connecting said Shaft and said operating means whereby the shaft is reversely op'- erated as anv incident to operation Yof Said mechanism, Scrapers adapted to travel longitudin'ally of the door when in said given p0 Sition, an operative connection between said Shaft and ,Said Scrapers whereby the Scrapers are A.movedlongitudinally of the door-upon operation 'of the Shaft, an operative connection between, the Shaft and Scrapers including a clutch', and ymeans disengaging said clutch after"afpredeterinined travel of the Scrapers under influence of the shaft said vmechanism comprising 'propelling means for the carriage vwhereby said Scrapers are actuated during movement of the carriage to Withdraw the' door-handling mechanism from alignment with the door opening from 'which the door has been removed to permit discharge of material from the oven.

In apparatus for cleaning the doors of coke ovens and the like, a carriage, means supported from the carriage and constructed and arranged to engage an oven door and re move and replacethe'same, and to support the doorin -a given positionl When removed, mechanism associated with said carriage and adapted to bereversely operated after removal of a door by said door-carrying mechanism and kprior to'v replacement thereof, meansV toA operate said mechanism, a shaft, means connecting said shafty and said operating means whereby theshaft is reversely operated as an incident tov operation of said mechanism, Scrapers adapted to travel longitudinally of the door -when in said given position, an operative connection between said Shaftand Said Scrapers whereby the Scrapers are moved longitudinally of the door upon operation of the Shaft, an operative connection between thepshaft and Scrapers including ay clutch, andfmeans disengaging said clutch after a predetermined travel of the Scrapers under influence of the shaft, the mechanism associated yWith the carriage comprising a ramadapted `to enter the opening vleftbvreinoval 'of the door, said ram including a portion formedr as a rack, and gearing connecting/said rack 'and ySaid Shaft.
