[Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv)] In loading means for refuse carts, in which a skip is raised in guides on the vehicle and tipped on continued hoisting after reaching the ends of the guides, adjustable abutments are provided for insertion into the guides at any height to form stops, thus permitting tipping to take place at any desired point. In the illustrated form, a skip, having rollers 2 engaging vertical guides 18 on the vehicle, is raised by one or more ropes or chains 7 actuated by the hand winch 9 and is tipped when the rollers are arrested by the curved upper ends of the guides or abut against pins 10<SP>1</SP> inserted laterally through the guides at various levels. Preferably the guides extend well above the end or side of the vehicle so that the hopper can be raised to tip over the top of the end or side walls. Roller guides 19 steady the hopper when in its uppermost position. For consolidating the contents to secure a maximum load before lifting, the hopper is fitted with a compressing- member comprising pivotal plates b, c of which c is pivoted to the hopper at d and b is corrugated and pivoted at e to a member traversed across the hopper by a winch-actuated rope f, screw-mechanism or rack-and-pinion gear, all operated by worm gear h from the handle h<SP>1</SP>.
