Exciting; cores and yokes.-In constant-current systems the generator 11 is excited by a separate exciter having a single armature 1, main and auxiliary poles M<1>, M<2>, A<1>, A<2>, main brushes M<3> and auxiliary brushes A<3>, field windings on the main poles in series with the line, and two separate additive windings on the auxiliary poles, one of these windings, 21, being an exciting winding connected to the auxiliary brushes, and the other, 31, a compensating winding in series with the generator field winding 12 and connected to the main brushes. A " stabilizing " winding 41 is also wound on the auxiliary poles and is connected in series with the exciter main field winding carrying the line current. The yoke is split circumferentially into portions 3, 4 by a nonmagnetic ring 5, thus dividing the main and auxiliary poles. The windings 21, 31 embrace the whole auxiliary pole, and the winding 41 for highly regenerative loads is wound separately and reversely around each part thereof, one portion assisting the windings 21, 31 and the other portion opposing them. The permeability of the pole-part carrying the opposing portion of the winding 41 is less than that of the other polepart. On ordinary loads the "stabilizing" winding is wound so that it wholly opposes the windings 21, 31. To prevent sparking during commutation the armature coils are given a fractional pitch.
