Reproducing needles, sharpening appliances for. - A shearing or cutting device for fibre or like needles of talking- machines comprises a rotary cutting-disc 5 working across a slot 4 in a face plate 2 mounted on a base 1, the disc being loosely mounted on a pivot 6 which is moved towards the needle resting in the slot 4 during the cutting operation; the disc rotates about the pivot 6 by movement of the latter towards the needle and by engagement of the disc with the needle during cutting, so that for each succeeding cut a different portion of the cutting edge is used. The pivot 6 engages a slot 7 in the plate 2 and is mounted upon the short arm 8 of a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted at 10 in the plate, the other arm 14 of the lever having a finger piece 22 by which it is operated against a spring. A cup 16 is detachably secured on the pivot 6 by a spring member 20 engaging a groove in the pivot and collects the cut pieces, the edge of the cup opposite the slot 4 engaging the end of the inserted needle, and regulating the amount cut. The base has a slot 21 adapted to fit over the turntable spindle of the machine so that the cutter can be used without removing the needle from the sound-box.
