My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as phonographs or talking machines, and relates particularly to the improvement of the associated parts thereof.
The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, efficient, convenient, neat and attractive in appearance, compact, durable and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
The invention has among its further objects the production of a machine of the kind described having a novel sound box and stylus construction.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consist-s in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of the sound box and stylus;
Fig. 3 is a view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a. view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown, the mechanism illustrated consists of the tone arm 2, at the free end of which is connected the sound box or reproducer 3 and to which are attached parts carrying the needle or stylus 3 arranged to cooperate with a record of the desired type. In the particular example shown, I have illustrated the use of a disc record mounted on the usual rotatable r carrier or turn-table.
A stylus or needle holder 30 is adapted to be carried by the sound box or reproducer 3, said stylus holder having a plurality of stylus-receiving apertures therethrough to hold the needle in the various positions re- Serial No; 586,003.
quired. These stylus-receiving apertures are so positioned that they intersect, and a thumbscrew 31 is adj ustably arranged on the holder to engage the needles when inserted through either of the stylus receiving apertures, thus simplifying the construction and adjustment of said parts.
A bar 32 is carried-by and extends laterally of both sides of the stylus holder 30, as shown in Figs. 2 to 4, said bar being slotted inwardly from both its ends, as at 33, the portions of the bar on one side of said slot being cut back from both the free ends as at 34. Pins 35, sharpened at their points to provide knife edges, are carried by the sound box and are adapted to pivotally engage in shallow knife-edge bearings 36 formed in those portions of the bar 32 extended beyond the cutoff ends 34. Springs 37, adjustably carried by means of screws 38 secured to the sound box are adapted to be slidably inserted throughthe slots 33 formed in the bar 32 and positioned inwardly of the bearings 36, there being adjusting screws 39 for the purpose of adjustably securing said springs in place in the slots in said rod 32. It will be noted that the springs 37, carried by the sound box, extend in opposite directions so as to yieldably press the stylus holder upon its knife-edged bearings and to yieldably permit its pivotal movement thereon in opposite directions. The stylus bar 40, carried by the diaphragm 41 of the sound box, is suitably secured to the movable stylus holder 30 so as to cooperate therewith to conduct the vibrations imparted thereto by the needle traveling over the record.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
In a phonograph, a. tone arm, a sound box carried thereby provided with spaced knife edges projecting therefrom, a stylus holder having transversely extending slotted projections, a portion of said projections extending beyond the slots and provided with shal- 10W knife edge hearings to engage the cooperating knife edges to form a fulcrum for said stylus holder, springs secured in said slots and connected with the sound box to yieldingly oppose pivotal movement of said stylus holder and adjustable means for regulating the tension of said springs.
