Abstract

103,523. Mitchell, F. B. Jan. 31, 1916. Brakes, arrangement of; returning soundbox to starting-point; positioning needles in sockets, tools for; disk records. - A friction block carried on the sound-box is arranged to drop on to the record surface at the end of reproduction and acts either as a brake to stop the record or as a repeating-device to return the sound-box to the starting point. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the block C is of eccentric form pivoted at C<2> to an adjustable plate C<2>. At the end of a reproduction, the needle falls into a deep groove E<2>. and the block C makes contact with the record and, by rotation on its pivot C<2>, lifts the needle clear. According to the adjustment of the plate C<4> in the slot C<3>, the block C either stops the record or is dragged by the moving record to the outer edge, the needle again falling into the playing-groove at the starting point when the block C passes over the edge. The block C is weighted or spring-controlled so that, when free, it returns to normal position. The deep groove E<2> may be replaced by a depressed central portion of the record. For outwardlyplaying records, the block C is placed on the inner side of the stylus, and the deep groove E<2> is formed near the rim of the record, or the playing-groove is continued to the record-rim. Instead of a pivoted eccentric block, a fixed block may be used, or a block sliding in an inclined groove in a member secured to the sound-'box on the tone-arm, or a block H, Fig. 6, suspended by links K, K<1> and balanced by a counterweight K<2>. The swing of the tone-arm may be assisted by slightly inclining its pivot, and a removable stop may be placed in its path, which, when in position, limits the return motion of the tone-arm and allows the friction block to arrest the record. In order to ensure that the needle always projects the same distance from its socket, the point of the needle is first inserted in a blind-hole L<3> in a member L, Fig. 7, having an adjustable base L<1>. The needle is clamped in the stylus socket while still resting in the member L, which is then removed.
