Abstract

227,579. Thomas, J. G. P., and Thomas Inventions Development Co., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1923. Dynamometers, rotary-transmission.-The apparatus comprises two intermeshing gear wheels 1, 2, one of which is connected to the power shaft of a prime mover and the other, to a power absorber, a casing 9 containing the gear wheels mounted to rock slightly on antifriction bearings 13 any convenient axis, said casing not being connected in any way to the casings of the prime mover or of the power absorber, and means for measuring the torque exerted on the casing when power is transmitted. The shafts 3, 4 of the gears are mounted on antifriction bearings 5, 6, the housings of which are bolted to the casing 9. which itself is mounted in radial antifriction bearings 12 to rock about the shaft 3. The casing 9 is slotted at the top and a bolt 17 passed through the slot and through the frame 14 serves to limit its rocking movement. The casing 9 has fixed to it arms 18 at each side distanced apart by suitable distance pieces and provided at the ends with knife edges so that the pull onthe arms can be measured by a spring balance &c. The power shaft is connected through any suitable universally jointed shaft to the coupling member 10 and the coupling member 11 through a universally jointed shaft to a power absorber such as a fan, brake, or dynamo. The base 15 is provided with a well containing water for cooling the apparatus. The gears may be changed for another pair of different gear ratio or bevel gears or a worm and worm wheel may be substituted.
