Abstract
304,349. Savage, A. W. Oct. 18, 1927. Dynamometers, rotary-transmission.-Relates to the class utilizing the longitudinal reactions of rotary helicoidal surfaces for equalizing or measuring forces, and comprises driving and driven shafts and a coupling member rotatable and axially slidable relatively to the shafts and characterized in that at' one or each end of the coupling member antifriction devices are located on the member or the adjacent shaft and engage one or more grooves or surfaces on the shaft or member respectively, they or each groove or surface being helical. A helical groove and a groove parallel to the shaft may be used. The coupling member 16 is provided at each end with driving arms 33, 34 each arm terminating in a ball 35, 36 on ball bearings. Each ball engages in a helical groove in the corresponding housing 17, 18 carried by shafts 23, 24 which are coaxial with the coupling member and provided with recesses and ball bearings to receive the ends of the coupling member. A split casing 20 surrounds both housings 17, 18 and coupling member and is fixed to the supporting brackets 21, 22 in which are located ball-thrust bearings 40 for the shafts 23, 24. The axial thrust from member 16 is balanced by a steelyard device connected to a member 19 and is a measure of the torque. The device may be used as a coupling or the movement of the member 16 may be used to govern the engine. When used with an aircooled engine the power output is used for enginecooling purposes.
