Abstract
226,638. Scott, W. H. Oct. 23, 1923. Steering-gear. - Relates to steering-gear operated by hand and assisted by electric power and consists in arranging for the coils of the operating contacts by which current is supplied to the motor to be controlled by the. starting contacts operated by hand and to be coupled to a closed circuit through which current passes even when the motor is idle. The electric motor H has a free pinion h<2> which can be clutched to the armature shaft by the solenoid I when current flows through the coil I<2> and is declutched' by the spring i when no current flows. A small current flows from F through the resisance g, coil I<2>, slip rings E and contacts C, C<1>, C<2>, back to the main G. The hand wheel shaft carries the slip rings E and contacts C', C<2> the contacts C being on the spur wheel B on the rudder shaft. On turning the hand wheel, the spring plungers of the contacts C' or C<2> are compressed and unshort the coil j or j<2> and later unshort the coil k of the starting resistance k<2> so that the motor is put into operation to drive the rudder shaft, motion being maintained by keeping the movement of the hand wheel up to that of the rudder shaft.
