Controlling variable-speed gearing for use with electric traction motors by electromagnets which are controlled automatically by variations in the driving torque. The torque is transmitted through a flexible coupling, or through epicyclic gearing, or is alternatively taken up by reaction on a swinging field-frame of the driving motor. Electric controllers for the motor circuits may be operated by the same means as the changespeed gear. Fig. 6 shows one form of apparatus in which a motor 2 drives a shaft 3 through an electromagnetic change-speed gear-box 4 and a worm 24 adapted to compress a spring 27 in proportion to the torque. The movement thus produced acts in an electric switch device 10 whereby electromagnets are selectively operated to effect changes in the gear-box 4. Fig. 7 shows an apparatus in which the same object is attained by providing the driving motor 2 with a swinging field-frame which compresses a spring 33 and acts upon an electric switch device 10. If electric control of the motor circuits is required in addition, suitable rheostat contacts 39, Fig. 8, are added to the switch 10 and are connected to the field or armature windings of the motor. The change-speed and control element may have a spring-connection to a manual lever so as to be semi-automatic in character. In a further modification, semi-automatic con trol is obtained by combining manually operated switch with separate torque-operated switches. Several gear-boxes and motors may be controlled by one aperture.
