Abstract

719,277. Controlling change-speed gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Sept. 2, 1952 [Sept. 27, 1951], No. 22081/52. Class 80 (2) An electrically operated control means for a change-speed gear is characterized in that the electro-motive power is adjusted to reduce the speed of operation during downward change as compared with the speed of operation during upward change. As shown in Fig. 1 an electric motor 10 drives, through a gear 11, a cam shaft 12 which co-operates with clutch actuating levers 13 for establishing the gear ratios. A change-over switch 15 is shown by full lines in its position for downward changes. Movement of the switch to the position 15<SP>1</SP>, shown in broken lines, inserts a resistance 17 in the excitation circuit of the motor 10 which then runs more quickly in the reverse direction to effect upward gear changes. The motor armature has a separate supply 10<SP>1</SP>. In a modification the excitation of the motor is varied by using either a part only or the whole of the field windings and in another modification the supply voltage is varied by using either one half or the whole of the cells of a battery. The motor thus drives more slowly when effecting downward than when effecting upward gear changes. The change-over switch may be moved to an inoperative position automatically when the gear position is reached.
