Abstract

Stopper hinged at one side.-Containers designed to be tightly closed, such as cans or boxes e.g. for tobacco or cigars, have the upper part of the side wall 2 folded over at 3 to form a horizontal shoulder 4, the edge being soldered at 5. A cover 6 wich a depression at 7 is hinged at 8 to the body and in the closed position is drawn down on the shoulder 4 by a toggle fastening hinged at 11 to the cover and comprising a strap 10, a lever 13, and a bracket 16. To effect a tight closure an inner cover 18 of resilient material such as sheet steel or brass is secured to the cover by bolts 19, its edge having a gasket 20 of rubber, cork, &c., engaging the rim 3 of the opening of the body, the rearward edge of which is, as shown, set inwardly so as to make a more or less simultaneous contact of the gasket 20 with all parts of the edge 3. In modifications, the inner cover may be rigid and the outer cover resilient, or both may be resilient, or the inner closure may consist of a marginal strip attached to the outer cover.
